WACO, Texas - On a day when Joey Hainsfurther had three hits, his biggest at-bat came when he was retired in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hainsfurther's sacrifice fly plated Landis Ware with the game-winning run, as Baylor evened the series against Kansas with a 9-8 win Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Baylor (13-8, 1-2 Big 12) needed a rally when Kansas (14-8, 1-1 Big 12) took the lead with a sacrifice fly of its own in the top of the eighth.

Gregg Glime led off the bottom of the inning with a double, Ware brought him home with a triple that tied the game at 8-8, and one out later Hainsfurther delivered his sacrifice fly.

For the second straight game, Kansas jumped out to an early lead. The Jayhawks got on the board in the first on Tony Thompson's RBI double, and they added two more runs in the second on a Brandon Macias triple to take a 3-0 lead.

The Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the second and five runs in the third. Ware drove in Max Muncy with a fielder's choice groundout in the second, and Hainsfurther and Campbell got the third inning started with back-to-back doubles.

Muncy followed with a towering two-run homer to right, giving Baylor a 4-3 lead, and the Bears added two more runs on Glime's groundout and Ware's RBI single.

Baylor starting pitcher Logan Verrett settled down and worked a perfect third inning, but the Jayhawks chased him from the game when they put runners on the corners with one out in the fourth. Verrett did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.

Tom Filip came on in relief and hit a batter to load the bases, but he escaped the jam with a double play grounder that allowed a run to score on an unusual play.

Robby Price's liner bounced just in front of Ware at shortstop, and Ware fired to second base to get Casey Lytle on a force play. Second baseman Raynor Campbell realized he couldn't get the force at first, but he threw to third and got Macias on a tag play. Though the out on Macias ended the inning, James Stanfield's run was counted because both runners were not forced to advance once Lytle was out at second base.

The first three Kansas batters in the fifth got hits, ending Filip's day in favor of Craig Fritsch, who came on with runners on the corners and no one out. Fritsch needed just five pitches to escape the jam unscathed. He looked the runner back to third before turning a 1-6-3 double play, and then got a ground out to end the inning with BU still leading 6-5.

The Bears added a run in the sixth when Brooks Pinckard singled, stole a base and scored on Hainsfurther's RBI single, but the Jayhawks tied the game in the seventh with a pair of solo homers off Fritsch.

With two hit batters and a walk, Kansas loaded the bases in the eighth with just one out. Kevin Winter (1-0) was called from the bullpen, and he allowed Price's sacrifice fly that gave KU an 8-7 lead, but got a fielder's choice groundout to get out of the inning only down one.

Winter ended up getting the first win of his career. He threw just two pitches in 0.2 innings of perfect relief.

The Bears took the lead with Hainsfurther's sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Pinckard moved from center field to the mound looking for his sixth save in as many appearances this season.

Pinckard got the first two batters on grounders, but he needed a diving catch from Chris Slater - who replaced him in center field - to end the game and earn the save.

Kansas reliever Travis Blankenship took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings.

Hainsfurther finished the day 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Ware went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Pinckard, Muncy and Tyler Collins added two hits apiece for the Bears. Kansas was led at the plate by Jimmy Waters, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.

The rubber game of the three-game set is scheduled for noon on Sunday. The series finale was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but it has been moved up an hour due to the men's basketball game against Duke in the Elite 8, which is scheduled to tip at 4:05 p.m.
