TF Distance Crew Kicks Off Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - Baylor's Brandon Reed and Jeff Sadler led the distance crew, each running personal bests in the 10,000 meters on Thursday at the 101st Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Seven Baylor distance runners, include three men and four women, competed during Drake's distance carnival portion of the four-day event.
Reed and Sadler hung with the leaders through the first five miles and hung on to finish second and fourth, respectively. Reed, a sophomore, chopped 18 seconds off his previous personal best with a second-place time of 30:40.12. Meanwhile, Sadler, a junior, made an even bigger improvement on his personal best, cutting 37 seconds for a fourth-place time of 31.10.34.
For the women, Samantha Patty was the top finisher placing fifth in the 5,000 meters. She finished in fifth at 16:57.28, ahead of teammates Katie Shaw, who was 10th at 17:16.49, and Cate Westenhover, who was 13th at 17:24.41.
In her first career 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Kristen Hanselka turned in a solid time of 10:42.94 to place seventh overall.
Also for the men, junior Robbie Knorr placed 11th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:41.90.
Baylor's relay crews and field event competitors will begin action tomorrow on the third day of the Drake Relays. Running events begin at 8 a.m., while field events start at 8:30 a.m. Live results can be found at www.drakerelays.org.
