Track Lands 19 on Academic All-Big 12

IRVING, Texas - Baylor's track and field placed 19 members, including 13 women and six men, on the Academic All-Big 12 Team announced by league officials on Tuesday.
For the women, the list was highlighted by sophomore Diamond Richardson, who was nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Richardson, a journalism major from DeSoto, Texas, is currently ranked fourth in the Big 12 in the 400 meters and serves as the anchor of the NCAA's 10th-fastest 4x400-meter relay team.
Joining Richards on the women's first team were 10 other members including three-time first team selections Erin Bedell, Kathryn Benvegnu, and Danielle Bradley, two-time first team selections Brittany Bruce, Leigh Ann Ganzar, and Lauren Simpson. Rounding out the first team selections were first-time members Kristen Hanselka Samantha Patty, Jessica Ubanyionwu and Cate Westenhover.
Seniors Katie Shaw and Loren Hodges each made their third appearance on the academic all-league team earning nomination on the second team.
For the men, Tim Dobin, James Gilreath and Jeff Sadler each earned their second first-team nomination, while Kyle Cash, Chris Gowell and Philip Raaf.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 124 first team members combined with 36 on the second team, while the women had 155 first team recipients and 29 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Baylor's track and field team will be back on the track at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships this weekend on May 14-16 in Columbia, Mo.
