EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Chris Gowell earned the third All-America honor of his career with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Gowell, who earned All-America honors at the 2009 indoor and outdoor national meets, came back from an injury at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships to get back on the awards stand outdoors.
In a stacked field, Gowell chased the field through the first lap, and made a late charge into seventh place at the finish. The Newport, South Wales, native finished with a time of 1:47.67 in front of a third-day NCAA record sell-out crowd of 11,972.
"This was maybe the deepest field ever in the 800, and I am really proud of how Chris fought this year, coming back after injuring himself indoors," head coach Todd Harbour said. "He has meant so much to the resurgence of our middle distance program, just being a great teammate and great leader during his two years at Baylor."
