WACO, Texas - Playing in her first collegiate game, freshman Georgia Mullins registered the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute to lead Baylor (1-0-0) to a 1-0 win over Rice (0-1-0) Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field. The Bears are now 10-4-1 all-time in season openers.
"It's a great to start off your season in a positive fashion," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We played a lot of kids today, and I think they all stepped up and really rose to the challenge."
Baylor nearly took an early lead in the 10th minute, as Hannah Dismuke's free kick was saved by Rice's Meghan Erkel and deflected to the feet of Lotto Smith, who seemingly put it away. However, the Bears were called for offsides, negating the goal.
The Bears outshot the Owls, 6-4 in the opening stanza, forcing three saves from Erkel.
Baylor got on the board in the 63rd minute when a free kick from Dismuke was rebounded back outside the six-yard box and Mullins one-timed the left-footed strike into the far post for the lead.
Courtney Seelhorst came up huge for the Bears in the second half, making three saves. Rice's Hayley Williams nearly tied the score in the 65th minute when her header made its way towards the upper corner, only to see Seelhorst leap for the one-handed save.
Seelhorst came up big again in the 85th minute, as a shot from Alexandra Rice was collected on a nice diving effort.
The Bears' defense withstood eight second-half shots from the Owls en route to the victory.
Despite being outshot 12-8, Baylor had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. In all, 22 Baylor players saw action on the night.
Baylor will be back in action on Sunday to take on McNeese State (0-1-0) at 1:00 p.m. at Betty Lou Mays Field.
