WACO, Texas - After her impressive performance over the weekend, Baylor thrower Skylar White was named the Big 12 Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday by league officials.
After setting indoor and outdoor shot put records on seven occasions as a freshman, White kicked off her sophomore campaign with another record-breaking performance. The sophomore from DeSoto, Texas, unleashed a toss of 55 feet, 8.75 inches, more than four feet better than her 2009 indoor mark of 51-6.25, to earn the Big 12's weekly honor.
White's throw automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships, and ranks as the third best throw in the collegiate ranks this season. While earning her the top spot at the Texas A&M Conference Challenge, she now sits atop the Big 12 in the event by nearly three feet.
The honor is the first in White's career, and marks the first for Baylor since Trey Harts and Erin Bedell each received the distinction on April 21, 2009. Kansas sophomore thrower Mason Finley won this week's men's award with a world-leading shot put performance.
After a week off next weekend, Baylor will be back in action at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Jan. 29-30. The two-day meet will be hosted at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
