LUBBOCK, Texas- After dropping the first, Baylor's volleyball team spent the rest of the match trying to catch up, eventually falling in five sets (13-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-10, 15-13) to Texas Tech on Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas.
The Bears (15-9, 3-6) got 17 kills from junior Torri Campbell, 14 kills from sophomore Zoe Adom and 11 more from senior Briana Tolbert, but hit below .100 in three of the five sets to give Texas Tech (15-9, 1-8) its first Big 12 victory of the season. Setter Kate Harris added 47 assists and 20 digs, while senior libero Allison King added a season-high 27 digs. The Bears totaled a season-high 103 digs with four players in double digits.
Baylor seemed to fluster Texas Tech's leading attackers Amanda Dowdy and Breann David, forcing the pair to record 11 errors each. But, Dowdy and David came through for Tech at the end, totaling 15 kills each in the match.
Baylor struggled offensively in the first set, hitting just .089, while Texas Tech flourished at a .429 clip. The Bears tied the set early at 5-5 with a pair of kills by Campbell, but the Red Raiders then put on a big run to open up a 15-9 lead. From there, Tech's Breann David racked up three kills to help her team to a 25-13 set win.
In the second set, Baylor was able to flip the numbers offensively and step up its blocking on defense. Baylor out-hit Tech .270 to .043 and out-blocked the opponent 5.0 to zero. After 3-1 run to open from Tech, the Bears responded with a 7-3 run with two kills by Tolbert. The Red Raiders came back to tie the match at 12-12, but three consecutive blocks as part of a 4-0 run put Baylor in position. Tolbert and Zhang teamed up for two of the blocks, while Dibbern added solo block. Baylor closed the set out with a 5-1 run, capped by a Zhang kill.
In the third set, the two teams stayed close, tying the set nine different times. Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Baylor came back to tie it at 9-9 with a kill by Zoe Adom. The Red Raiders then took a 15-12 lead, but Baylor tied it at 16-16 with a kill from Zhang and two TTU errors. Later, tied at 20-20, Adom and Alyssa Dibbern had back-to-back kills for a 22-20 lead, which Baylor held to 24-22. Texas Tech came right back with four in a row, including two kills and two Baylor errors.
Baylor again turned the offense around in the fourth set, ripping off 15 kills with just two errors for a .406 hitting percentage in the frame. Four straight Texas Tech errors, including a block assist from Tolbert and Zhang contributed to an 11-3 BU lead. From there, Baylor only extended the lead, getting eight kills over a 9-2 run to make it 21-8. Campbell then sandwiched two kills around a Dibbern kill, and the Bears took the set 25-10.
The momentum seemed to stay with Baylor early in the fifth as the Bears took a 3-0 lead on two kills and a block. But, the Red Raiders scored eight of the next 10 to take an 8-5 lead. Baylor battled back to tie the match at 13-13 with a TTU error, but Dowdy came up with a kill for the Red Raiders and the Bears ended with an error to lose 15-13.
Baylor will be back at home in the Ferrell Center in its next match, taking on Kansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Earlier this season, the Wildcats took a 3-0 sweep over the Bears in Manhattan, Kan.
