COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's track and field team earned two victories and met NCAA qualifying marks in two other events at the Texas A&M Conference Challenge on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
The meet pitted three Big 12 teams against three teams from the SEC, Pac-10 and Conference USA in a scored meet. The Big 12, comprised of Baylor, Texas A&M and Nebraska earned victories in both the men's and women's races.
"We had a good meet with some really good performances this weekend," head coach Todd Harbour said. "It was great to see Tiffany (Townsend) auto in the 200 and our men's 4x400 relay team run a really good time. We also got strong efforts from Leigh Ann Ganzar in the 1,000 and Brittany OgunMokun in the 800. We will definitely get back to work to get ready for the conference meet in two weeks."
For the women, senior Leigh Ann Ganzar collected a big victory in the 1,000 meters with a personal-best time of 2:50.25. Ganzar led from wire-to-wire, extending her lead along the way before winning by more than three seconds with a meet-record time. Ganzar wasn't the only one to win an event and set a meet record, as sophomore Brittany OgunMokun accomplished the same at 600 yards. OgunMokun's time of 1:21.68 gave her a 1.5-second win and the fourth-best mark all-time at Baylor, along with the meet record.
Senior All-American Tiffany Townsend continued the outstanding day for the women's team, meeting the NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the 200 meters. Townsend had fallen .01 seconds short of the 23.20 mark needed two weeks ago at Arkansas, but ran her second-fastest time ever to place second, clocking a 23.16 to punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Baylor men's 4x400-meter relay team also dipped below the NCAA automatic qualifying mark with the second-fastest time in the nation of 3:05.92. The combination of Whitney Prevost, Marcus Boyd, Drew Seale and Zwede Hewitt turned a second-place finish. Prevost led off with a 46.9 carry, followed by a 45.8 from Marcus Boyd. Seale held on in the third leg with a time of 46.7 and Hewitt clocked a closing stretch of 46.2.
Also on the women's side, Jessica Ubanyionwu continued her string of top-three finishes, placing second in the triple jump with a leap of 42-11.5 on her final attempt. Sophomore Skylar White had another solid finish in the shot put, finishing fourth with a throw of 53-10.5.
The Baylor men were led by a combination of sprinters and middle distance runners for a handful of top-five finishes. Woodrow Randall placed fifth in the 60 meters with a time of 6.73, while Whitney Prevost was third in the 200 meters at 21.07. In the middle distances, Drew Seale won his heat and placed second overall at 600 yards with a time of 1:10.39, just one spot ahead of James Gilreath's 1:10.45. In the 800 meters, Gavyn Nero set a personal best for the second time in a row, with a third-place time of 1:49.72.
Diamond Richardson posted a solid time in the 400 meters to place fifth at 54.40, while Lizzy Whitney also had a top finish, placing third in the 600 yards at 1:23.22.
Baylor will have a week off before gearing up for the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb. On Feb 28-29. The Bears will head to the Devaney Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska for the conference meet.
