WACO, Texas - Josh Turley pitched three innings more than any previous outing, tossing 7.1 innings and limiting Louisiana Tech to two runs on six singles in the 17th-ranked Baylor baseball team's 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, Baylor recorded a four-game series sweep and extended its winning streak to six. The Bears hadn't swept a four-game series since taking all four from Lubbock Christian on Feb. 10-11, 1989.
Turley didn't allow a Bulldog baserunner to reach second base until he allowed back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh inning. He escaped that jam with a strikeout and a foul popout, and he added his career-best seventh strikeout in the eighth inning.
The Bears broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Steve DalPorto led off with a bunt single, and after a walk to Brooks Pinckard, Logan Vick put the Bears on the board with a RBI single.
Chris Slater added a run with a fielder's choice grounder, Max Muncy singled and Josh Ludy hit a three-run home run off the top of the wall in left-center field to extend the Bears' lead to 5-0. Louisiana Tech starting pitcher Jeb Stefan (2-2) allowed a RBI double to Jake Miller before ending the inning and handing the ball to Kyle Roliard out of the bullpen.
Stefan took the loss after allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Roliard combined with Josh Barrett to hold the Bears scoreless on two singles the rest of the way, but the six-run lead was plenty for Turley and the Baylor bullpen.
Louisiana Tech threatened in the eighth when a walk and a single put two on with no outs. Turley struck out Taylor Terrasas then handed the ball to Max Garner, who needed just one pitch to retire Mark Threlkeld. Crayton Bare relieved Garner, and after a walk, Marc Picciola looped a two-run single into right field to cut the Baylor lead to 6-2.
Bare got the final out in the eighth, the turned the ball over to Kolt Browder, who struck out the first two batters of the ninth and got a grounder to first to end the game.
Turley (1-1) earned his first win of the season by allowing six hits - all singles - and two runs with one walk and seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
Ludy and Vick both went 2-for-4, while Pinckard went 1-for-2, walked twice and stole two bases. Joey Ford went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
The Bears continue their 14-game homestand when they host Florida International Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in their final game before opening Big 12 Conference play against Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
