SAN MARCOS, Texas - Baylor allowed just two hits through the first eight innings, but the 17th-ranked Bears had to hold off a ninth-inning rally from Texas State to take a 6-4 win on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

Texas State plated four runs in the ninth and had the bases loaded with the potential tying run on second base, but Brooks Pinckard got Joey Fuda to ground into a game-ending fielder's choice.

"I thought it was a really good performance by a whole bunch of guys," assistant head coach Mitch Thompson said. "That is as good of team win as you are going to see. Every guy that went back out there on the mound did a really nice job. We played good defense and we had some really good at-bats."

Baylor (7-5) won back-to-back games for the first time since the season's opening weekend. The Bears' offense pounded out 15 hits and had five players with multi-hit games, while the Baylor bullpen held the Bobcats in check most of the way until issuing three walks in the ninth inning.

Jon Ringenberg (1-0) picked up the win by retiring all nine batters in a pre-determined 3.0-inning start. Lee Colon (1-1) took the loss for Texas State, allowing three runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.

Baylor got on the board in the top of the fourth when Josh Ludy singled on a 0-2 pitch and later scored when Joey Hainsfurther's single to right field was overrun by Jeff McVaney.

Kolt Browder came on in relief of Ringenberg to start the fourth and allowed a leadoff double to Tyler Sibley. After a flyout, Sibley moved to third on a balk, but Browder escaped the jam with a strikeout and an infield popout.

The Bears padded their lead when the first three batters in the fifth reached safely to load the bases. Chris Slater singled, Steve DalPorto laid down a bunt single, and all runners were safe when Slater slid in safely at third on Brooks Pinckard's sacrifice bunt attempt. Logan Vick's grounder scored Slater, and Max Muncy's RBI single scored DalPorto to make it 3-0 and end Colon's outing.

Baylor added two more runs in the sixth when Hainsfurther and Jake Miller singled and DalPorto scored both runners with a double down the left-field line. Pinckard added on another run in the eighth when he hit what looked like a two-run triple to the gap in right-center, but the ball bounced off the warning track and over the fence, limiting him to a RBI double.

DalPorto finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Hainsfurther went 3-for-4 and Slater went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt.

Browder worked around a two-out walk in the fifth before handing the ball to freshman Brad Kuntz to start the sixth.

Kuntz allowed a single and hit a batter, but he struck out Casey Kalenkosky for the second out of the inning before fellow freshman Trae Davis was called in from the bullpen.

Davis walked McVaney to load the bases, but he struck out Cody Gambill to end the threat and start a string of three consecutive strikeouts. Davis worked 2.1 hitless innings and struck out five, but he allowed consecutive walks to start the ninth inning, and Pinckard was brought in from center field to finish the game.

The Bobcats took advantage of another walk, a hit batter and three singles - including one that looped over the head of Landis Ware and glanced off his glove before falling safely - to plate four runs and put the potential tying run on second base. But Pinckard got Fuda to hit a grounder to DalPorto at second base for the final out.

The Bears return home to open a season-long 14-game homestand with a four-game series against Louisiana Tech. Baylor meets the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
