Baseball Wins in 10 Innings at UTA, 9-4

ARLINGTON, Texas - Dan Evatt hit a three-run home run and Josh Ludy drove in the game-winning run with a RBI triple as part of a five-run 10th inning, as Baylor took a 9-4 win over UT Arlington on Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Baylor (19-15) recorded its 10th comeback win of the year, and Ludy had the first four-hit game by a Baylor player this season.
UT Arlington (17-16) held a 3-1 lead after plating three runs in the fifth, but the Bears quickly regained the lead with three runs in the sixth. The Mavericks tied the game at 4-4 with a two-out RBI single in the seventh, but UTA was held to one hit the rest of the way by Max Garner and Logan Verrett.
"We just had a hard time getting a timely hit for much of the game, but we pitched it extremely well and played pretty solid defense," head coach Steve Smith said. "It was a well-played ball game and our guys threw the ball very well."
Eight different Baylor pitchers combined to hold UTA to one earned run while striking out 13 and walking just one in 10.0 innings of work.
Garner (2-1) picked up the win by working scoreless eighth and ninth innings, and Verrett - who was making his first relief appearance of the season - retired the side in order in the 10th to close out the win.
The Bears got on the board first when Logan Vick led off the third inning with his first home run of the season. Vick was making his first start since March 20 after missing 12 games with a hamstring injury.
Brad Kuntz, Dillon Newman and Crayton Bare combined to keep UTA off the board through four innings.
"I thought this was as good as I have seen (Newman) throw and that is why he got a second inning," Smith said. "I had everybody penciled in for an inning and then after his first inning I told him, `You earned a second one.' He was pretty fired up about it and he went out and gave us another good one."
The Mavericks scored three unearned runs against Trae Davis in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Ryan Walker followed an error with a RBI single, and Jake Pinchback brought in two runs with a double when Brooks Pinckard lost a ball in the lights in center field.
Baylor answered in its next at-bat, scoring three runs of its own to go back on top 4-3. Ludy had a two-out RBI single to score Lawton Langford, and Cal Towey drove in a pair of runs with a RBI triple to the wall in center field.
Pinch hitter Preston Morrow tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the seventh, but the Bears broke the game open with five runs in the 10th. Max Muncy led off with a triple that was inches from being a home run, and Ludy followed with a triple of his own that proved to be a game-winning hit.
Towey drew his third walk of the game, and Evatt, who also drew three walks in the game, drilled the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for a three-run homer. Chris Slater added a RBI single later in the inning.
Ludy finished 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while Towey, Joey Hainsfurther, Landis Ware and Slater had two hits apiece for the Bears. Brian Nephew had three hits to lead UTA at the plate.
Baylor's next game is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, when the Bears host the first of three games in the "Battle of the Brazos" against Texas A&M. The final two games of the series will be played in College Station, Texas, with Saturday's game at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 1:05 p.m.
