WACO, Texas - On a day that featured past and present Baylor standouts, the track and field team won eight events on its home track in the Michael Johnson/Dr Pepper Classic at the Hart Patterson Track and Field Complex in Waco, Texas.
Baylor won three individual events on both the track and in the field, before adding both 4x440-yard relay titles at the end of the meet. Baylor's lone home event of the season also treated the fans to a star-studded cast of great athletes. The namesake of the meet, Michael Johnson, was on hand to sign autographs and take in the meet, while Olympians Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards-Ross each competed in the 400 meters.
"This was overall a really good day with all that was going on with Michael Johnson being back here and the others that came back to run and support the team," head coach Todd Harbour said. "The conditions were tough for a lot of the people running lap races, but we still had some outstanding performances. Christina (Holland) ran 57 today in the hurdles, and Gabriel (el Hanbli) ran 51-flat. To do that in these conditions is really good. James' (Gilreath) 1:48 was outstanding (in the 800). Marcus (Boyd) and Whitney (Prevost) both looked great in their races as well, we had lot of good ones."
The Bears' field event winners each set new personal bests and moved into the top 10 in the NCAA with their marks. Those winners included Nick Lyons in the javelin, Skylar White in the discus and Jessica Ubanyionwu in the triple jump.
"We had some big field events," Harbour said. "The javelin (by Nick Lyons) this morning early was clearly outstanding. That was the second-best throw in the country. Skylar (White) beat the top girl in the nation in the discus, throwing into the wind, and came back and got second in the shot put throwing against the top throwers in the nation. So she had a big day. And Jessica (Ubanyionwu) had her personal-best, 43-3 outdoors is her best jump."
In the javelin, Lyons shattered his own record by more than nine feet with a toss of 257 feet, two inches. His throw ranks as the top mark in the Big 12 and second-best throw in the country. White, meanwhile, moved from 13th to seventh in the women's discus with her career-best toss of 178-3. Ubanyionwu also had a career day in the triple jump, moving into sixth in the NCAA with a leap of 43-2.5.
Individually on the track, Baylor' men took home three titles on the day, led by career best times from James Gilreath in the 800 meters and Whitney Prevost in the 200 meters, as well as a solid mark by Gabriel El Hanbli in the 400-meter hurdles.
Gilreath was in the front of the field the entire race, holding off TCU's Jack O'brien down the stretch for the win in the 800 meters. The junior's time of 1:48.54 puts him in a tie for the 12th-best time in the NCAA.
In the men's 200 meters, Prevost came off the curve looking to create some space between his competitors, and he did exactly that, pulling away down the stretch for the win with a time of 20.70. Woodrow Randall placed third in the race with a time of 20.80.
El Hanbli, who opened the year with a career-best time, returned near-to-form in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.05. The freshman former Canadian national champion in the event, made a big surge after the final hurdle to nip Lane Dennis of ERI Athletics for the win.
Also in the sprints, Tiffany Townsend and Tiffani McReynolds each had solid days for the women, while Boyd and Randall were solid for the men. Townsend ran her first 200 of the season in a time of 23.25 to place fourth, while McReynolds was second in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.02 and fifth in the 100 meters at 11.37. Diamond Richardson also ran a season-best, placing fourth in the 400 meters at 53.37.
Boyd ran his season-opening 400 for the outdoor season, finishing third overall. His time of 45.65 was just .01 seconds behind TCU's Mychal Dungey and just .04 seconds behind meet champion Wariner. Randall, on the other hand, added another third-place finish to his day with a time of 10.23 in the 100 meters.
In the women's 800 meters, Baylor's Brittany OgunMokun and Leigh Ann Ganzar finished third and fourth, respectively. OgunMokun's third-place time clocked in at 2:09.18, while Ganzar was one spot back with a time of 2:10.57.
Baylor will travel to the site of some of its most successful relay meets in program history for the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet is scheduled to run from April 27-30.
