WACO, Texas - Four unearned runs with the two outs in the top of the third led No. 11 Missouri (28-5, 5-1) to a 6-0 win over No. 17 Baylor (28-6, 2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
"Today just wasn't our day," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We got some early base runners, but the unearned runs really hurt our momentum. The breaks just didn't go our way today."
Liz Paul (6-1) took the loss, allowing five hits, four unearned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Alicia Vasquez faced a pair of batters in the fifth, walking two, and Courtney Repka allowed three hits, two runs, two walks and a strikeout in 3.0 innings.
Kayce Walker went 2-for-2 with a walk on the day to lead a Baylor offense that registered just four hits.
Baylor got a leadoff single and a stolen base from Kathy Shelton in the first, but was stranded after a pair of strikeouts.
With two outs in the second and Kayce Walker at first after a walk, Shelbi Redfearn singled on a bunt and the runners advanced to second and third on a throwing error by Chelsea Thomas. But Thomas got a strikeout to end the Baylor threat.
Missouri broke the scoreless tie, as with two outs and a runner at third in the third, a spinning grounder came back to Paul in the circle but she couldn't field it cleanly, allowing Jenna Marston to score. A single to left center from Nicole Flemming put two runners on and a home run that bended around the right field foul pole from Nicole Hudson gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers added two more in the seventh on an RBI-double from Abby Vock.
Thomas (14-3) picked up the complete-game win, striking out 11, walking two and allowing four hits in 7.0 innings.
Baylor will begin eight-straight games away from home with a doubleheader at No. 22 Texas Tech (36-4, 1-3) on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. The second game can be heard live on ESPN Central Texas.
