TOWSON, Md. - Junior Jessica Ubanyionwu was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
Ubanyionwu, a triple jumper for the Baylor track and field team, earned second team honors to add to her growing list of accomplishments on the season. Also named to the academic all-district and all-conference teams, the El Paso, Texas, native also earned All-America honors in the triple jump during the indoor season and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships as well.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, and be nominated by his/her athletic administration.
Ubanyionwu, a two-time All-American and four-time all-Big 12 honoree, had a great 2011 season in competition. She posted sixth-place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while also earning all-Big 12 honors at the indoor and outdoor conference meets. At the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, Ubanyionwu posted her career-best mark of 44 feet, 1.5 inches to place third overall at the meet. She also won the triple jump at the UTA Bobby Lane Invitational and the Michael Johnson/Dr Pepper Classic.
Ubanyionwu becomes the 10th Baylor track and field student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors, and third in the last two seasons. The Bears' Erin Bedell and Chris Gowell each earned the distinction last season.
