DES MOINES - With the Baylor 4x400-meter relay women standing on the track, the lightning and rain hit in droves, leading to the postponement of action on Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Despite the Bears' mile relay teams feeling the effects of the weather, senior Tiffany Townsend was able to put together a standout performance to qualify for the finals in the women's 200 meters.
"Tiffany (Townsend) ran really well," head coach Todd Harbour said. "It was a great race, she just looks really good right now. (With the 4x400) its tough with two heats already run and the schedule we have ahead of us tomorrow. We'll have to make the decision of who to run on it and go with it."
With the first two heats in the books of the women's 4x400-meter relay, the Baylor women warmed up on the track and were set to get in the blocks, but a lightning strike and ensuing rain stopped the meet. Tomorrow, Baylor will be faced with the task of finishing in the top two in the third heat, running a third-place time faster than 3:33.00 or a fourth-place time faster than 3:32.88.
Along with the women's 4x400-meter relay Heat 3, the men's 4x400-meter relay, the men's 10,000 meters and two of the final events of the men's decathlon will all be resumed on Friday. NCAA officials announced schedule decisions would be made by 8 a.m. on Friday and posted on www.NCAA.com.
Individually, Townsend blazed down the fast track to qualify in the women's 200 meters, adding to her qualifying run in the 100 meters on Wednesday. In the heat that produced the event's three fastest times of the day, the Baylor senior turned in the second-best time of the day at 22.77. The time was Townsend's second-fastest time of the season, and fourth-fastest in her career.
Freshman Tiffani McReynolds narrowly missed qualifying in the 100-meter hurdles, running in a heat that featured four of the eight qualifiers. The current school record holder in the event, McReynolds was fifth in her heat and 11th overall with a time of 13.20.
In the only individual event on the day for the men, Prevost took on an extremely fast field in the 200 meters to finish 21st overall. The Baylor junior, also battling a foot injury suffered in relay practice two days prior, finished with a respectable time of 21.06.
Baylor continues action in the start of the final rounds on Friday evenings at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Bears will have just two competitors on the day with Jessica Ubanyionwu in the triple jump at 5:35 p.m. and Townsend in the 100 meters at 6:55 p.m.
