TORONTO - Baylor concluded its first foreign tour in four years in impressive fashion Monday with a 103-68 rout of the Ontario Revolution at Kerr Hall Gym on the Ryerson University campus. Baylor finished its foreign tour with a 3-1 mark, averaging 95.3 points in four games.
"A win like this is a great way to finish our foreign tour," Baylor head coach Scott Drew said. "We played hard and with a tremendous amount of intensity. We also played better defensively than we did in the previous three games."
Led by Pierre Jackson's game-high 17 points, six Baylor players reach double figures. Joining Jackson were Fred Ellis (16), Perry Jones III (16), Deuce Bello (14), Brady Heslip (12) and A.J. Walton (12). Walton arguably had one of the line's best stat lines; in addition to his 12 points, the Little Rock, Ark., native added game highs with nine assists and six steals. Ellis added six rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Jackson dished out five assists with three steals.
"The great thing about depth is that if one player doesn't step up, there's always someone else that can step in and shoulder the load," Drew said. "Different guys stepped up throughout this trip and we hope that trend continues this season."
For the majority of the tour, Baylor went with a man-to-man defense, unlike in previous seasons when the Bears primarily relied upon a 2-3 zone. The Bears forced 22 Ontario turnovers with Walton (six steals), Jackson (three) and Ellis (three) leading the charge.
"We have several options defensively," Drew said. "The last few years, we went with the zone defense because it fit our personnel. Now, with the guys we have, we might play zone or we might continue playing man-to-man. It depends on works best with our team, but we'll know more once practice starts in October.
However, the highlight of the night came courtesy of Bello. With Baylor securing a 30-point lead in the latter half of the fourth quarter, Bello threw down a dunk over an Ontario defender that brought the crowd and his teammates to their feet.
"Baylor fans need to get their season tickets now because I can promise you, there will be a lot of highlights like Deuce Bello's dunk this season," Drew said. "Baylor Nation will enjoy watching this team."
With its foreign tour complete, the Bears will return to floor for the first official day of practice on Friday, Oct. 14. Baylor is scheduled to open the 2011-12 regular season Nov. 11 against Texas Southern. Follow the Official Twitter feed of Baylor Basketball, @BaylorMBB.
