WACO, Texas - Baylor's volleyball team earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 academic year announced recently by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Baylor was one of just 92 NCAA Division I teams honored. Overall, 478 teams received the award, including men's and women's programs from NCAA Division II, III, NAIA, NJCAA, NCCAA and high school.
"Our players take great pride in their studies and have shown great discipline in achieving such high grades," head coach Jim Barnes said. "Juggling the demands of being a Division I, Big 12 student-athlete requires a strong work ethic, and we are very proud of each of our players. Our academic advisor, Kristen Bates, deserves a lot of credit as well for helping our team perform at such a high level in the classroom and achieve our program goal of a 3.3 team grade-point-average."
The award, which was initiated after the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Baylor's volleyball team is less than one month away from opening its 2011 season. The Bears will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Mortar Board Premier hosted by Purdue University on Aug. 26-27. BU will face the Boilermakers on Aug. 26 at 6 p.m., then play College of Charleston at 11 a.m. and VCU at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27.
