FORT WORTH - Baylor's volleyball team ran into a streaking TCU squad, dropping a 3-0 sweep (19-25, 20-25, 24-26) at the hands of the Horned Frogs on Tuesday night in Fort Worth, Texas.
TCU (10-0) converted relentless back-row play into timely offense to defeat the Bears (8-3), who had won eight of their last nine matches. While Baylor averaged a 22.3 digs per set, the Horned Frogs were even better at 25.6, holding the BU attack to a .149 hitting percentage.
The Bears showed signs of a comeback in the third set, but TCU regained the momentum carried through the first two sets to finish it out. TCU jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 8-3 in each of the first two sets, but it was Baylor that took the big lead in the third before falling.
"Our serve-receive and our passing let us down tonight, those are things we are just going to have work to get better," head coach Jim Barnes said. "Overall as a team, we just didn't step up tonight. We had too many people who were off tonight and it's tough to win when that happens."
Freshman Adri Nora paced the offense with a career-high-tying 14 kills, while Alyssa Dibbern added eight and Torri Campbell had six. Senior setter Brittany Ridenour recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 32 assists and a season-high 16 digs. Campbell and Zoe Adom each had four blocks for Baylor.
In the first set, the Horned Frogs piled up 31 digs, finding a way to control the Baylor attack that hit .000 in the set. After TCU built an 8-3 lead, the Bears cut into it with a 6-3 run on strength of two kills by Nora. After falling back down by five, BU put on a 5-0 run with a flurry of blocks. Adom recorded a solo block and assisted on one with Campbell, while Dibbern and Briana Tolbert team up on another to knot the score at 15. After a timeout TCU went to its leading attacker Kristen Hester, who had 13 kills on the night, for two kills to close out the set 25-19.
The second set mirror the beginning of the first with TCU building an 8-3 lead. Nora kept Baylor within striking distance with seven kills in the set, but Baylor got no closer than 22-19 before Hester ended the set with a service ace.
In the third, the Bears seemingly took control, stretching an early lead to six at 13-7. Nora had three kills and a block during the run, but TCU came storming back with a 4-0 to force a BU timeout. Qian Zhang then earned a service ace and Adom teamed with Campbell for a block to lead 19-13. The Horned Frogs again kept on the comeback trail, defeating two set points for Baylor and taking four straight points to close out the match 26-24.
Baylor travels to Las Vegas, Nevada, this weekend to take on UNLV, San Francisco and Fresno State at the UNLV Classic on Sept. 16-17. BU will face San Francisco at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, then face Fresno State at 11 a.m. CT and UNLV at 9:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
