LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite dominating the shot category 20-9, the Baylor soccer team (4-1-1) suffered its first defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss to Kentucky (5-0-0) at the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
"We just couldn't find the back of the net," head coach Marci Jobson said. "That happens in soccer, but we will learn from it and be better in all areas."
Kentucky jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal from Kelsey Hunyadi that was hit from 18 yards out in the 22nd minute.
But the Bears struck right back in the 27th minute as Justine Hovden notched her second goal of the season. Christine Clark made the pass to Hovden who blasted the shot into the upper left corner of the goal to even the game at 1-1.
Tied at one at the break, Baylor came out with a fury of shots in the second half, taking 15 to the Wildcats' two.
However, Kentucky broke the tie in the 84th minute with a header in front of the goal from Arin Gilliland off a corner kick.
BU cranked up the offense in the final five minutes, taking five shots. Selby Polley took a shot in the 86th minute that was blocked and Alexa Wilde collected the rebound that was one of eight saves from Kayla Price.
Wilde led the offense with four shots, three on goal, while Lisa Sliwinski took four shots that found two on net.
Baylor will return home on Friday, Sept. 9 to take on Texas State beginning at 7:00 p.m.
