Complete Big 12 Weekly Awards Release
IRVING, Texas -Baylor men's basketball sophomore Perry Jones III and junior Pierre Jackson were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for games of Jan. 9-15 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference.
Monday marked the third time in the league's 16-year history that Baylor won both awards the same week and the first time since Feb. 15, 2010 (LaceDarius Dunn, Ekpe Udoh). Dunn and Udoh pulled off the feat twice during the 2009-10 season.
PJ3 picked up his second player selection of the season, sharing this week's honor with Kansas' Tyshawn Taylor. Jackson, who earned his first rookie accolade of the season, became the second Baylor player to be named Big 12 Rookie of the Week this season (Brady Heslip).
Jones III, the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, averaged a team-best 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in 29.5 minutes last week. He shot a team-high 66.7 percent (16-of-24) as Baylor recorded victories at No. 18 Kansas State (75-73) and at home over Oklahoma State (106-65). He scored 17 points and added eight rebounds at K-State, including a critical offensive rebound with 25 seconds remaining. He then posted his fifth career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds against Oklahoma State. PJ3 leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg) and is shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
Jackson, a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 3.5 steals in 31.0 minutes off the bench for Baylor in its two victories. The junior guard shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the floor, including a 53.8 percent clip (7-of-13) from 3-point range. He notched his career-first double-double with 10 points and 11 assists at Kansas State. He followed with 18 points and eight assists in Baylor's 41-point win over Oklahoma State. The Las Vegas native ranks second on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg), while leading the squad in 3-point percentage (49.2), assists (5.1) and steals (1.9).
No. 4/4 Baylor (17-0, 4-0) is off to its best start in program history and will face another monumental road test Monday against No. 10/10 Kansas (14-3, 4-0) in Lawrence at 8:35 p.m. CST on ESPN Big Monday.
