March 21, 2012 HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Joey Hainsfurther pitched 5.0 shutout innings in his first career start on the mound, and Baylor jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 10-3 win over Sam Houston State on Wednesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

Hainsfurther (2-0) was expected to only pitch two or three innings in an outing designed to give him work on the mound. The senior two-way player hadn't pitched in a game since March 4, but because he needed only 39 pitches to work through the first four innings, he went back out for the fifth.

"That was really, really impressive," head coach Steve Smith said. "He went much longer than I would've hoped for because he was so efficient. If that's any indication of what he's capable of, then we've found ourselves another arm."

Baylor (15-7) took advantage of 10 walks and pounded 12 hits in a 10-run outburst that was its second-highest run total this season. Eight different Bears scored, and Nathan Orf and Logan Vick drew three walks apiece. Vick stole two bases, singled and scored three runs, and Josh Ludy had three RBI and reached base in all four plate appearances.

"We've been doing a great job as a club of taking the base on balls, so that's not atypical for us," Smith said. "I was glad to see us take some good swings as we got into the game. We swung the bats pretty well."

The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead on only one hit in the first inning. Sam Houston State (11-9) starter Andrew Godail (0-1) was pulled after walking three batters to load the bases with two outs in the first, and Josh Ludy greeted reliever Taylor Holt with a three-run double on his first pitch of the game.

Hainsfurther needed only 10 pitches in the first inning, 10 more in the second and eight pitches in the third. He allowed consecutive one-out singles in the second, but he snared a grounder back to the mound and turned a double play to escape the inning. Those two hits were the only two allowed by Hainsfurther, and he walked one and struck out three in a career-long 5.0 innings.

The Bears extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on bases-loaded RBI singles from Dan Evatt and Jake Miller, and those runs would prove to be enough, as the Baylor bullpen allowed only three runs in relief of Hainsfurther.

Baylor added two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Vick walked for the third time in as many plate appearances and came around to score, and Ludy scored on a Dan Evatt sacrifice fly in the fifth. A RBI single from Lawton Langford and a RBI double from Max Muncy gave the Bears a 9-0 lead in the sixth.

Trae Davis came on in relief and allowed three runs in 0.2 inning in the bottom of the sixth, but Brad Kuntz was called in from the bullpen and got a strikeout to work out of the inning with the Bears leading 9-3. Kuntz worked a scoreless seventh, Ryan Smith pitched a scoreless eighth, and Joe Kirkland retired the side in order in the ninth.

Smith recorded his first collegiate hit as a pinch hitter in the ninth and stayed in the game at second base. The Bears also got a pinch single from Wes Mercurio. Muncy, Miller and Logan Brown had two hits each. Muncy and Evatt drove in two runs, while Ludy led the way with three RBI.

Godail took the loss after allowing three runs on three walks without surrendering a hit in 0.2 innings. The Bearkats used 10 pitches in the game, with Holt and Michael Oros working the longest at 2.0 innings each.

Baylor returns to action when it hosts Kansas for a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark this season. Game times have been changed due to the Baylor basketball teams' appearances in the Sweet 16. Friday's series opener starts at 3:05 p.m. to avoid the men's basketball game at 6:15 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 4:05 p.m. to avoid the women's basketball game at approximately 1:30 p.m.
