IRVING, Texas - After a two-win weekend at the Texas Tech Open, Baylor thrower Skylar White was named the Big 12 Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week, conference officials announced on Wednesday.
White, who already held school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put, added the discus school record to her list of accomplishments last weekend. She uncorked a throw of 189 feet, two inches to gather her second win of the day. White's throw was more than 10 feet better than the previous school record in the event held by Brittany Devereaux at 178-6.
Battling a gusting wind all day in Lubbock, White's discus win came after a win in the shot put earlier in the day. Her throw of 55-0.25 kept her nearly a foot in front of the competition.
The honor is the second of White's career, and the first for Baylor since she earned the distinction the first time on Jan. 18, 2011. White is joined by the Big 12 Co-Male Athletes of the Week, Luke Bryant of Oklahoma and Deon Lendore of Texas A&M.
Coming up, Baylor hosts its lone home meet of the season, the Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic, on Saturday at the Hart Patterson Track and Field Complex. Field events start the day at 9:30 a.m., followed by running events beginning at 12 p.m.
