LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite outhitting the Red Raiders 5-3, Mikey Kenney's three-run home run proved to be the difference, as No. 24 Texas Tech (36-12, 9-7) defeated No. 25 Baylor (27-15, 4-9) 3-1 Friday night at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock.

"They got the big hit tonight and we didn't," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Courtney Repka did a nice job coming back in and shutting them down the rest of the way, we just weren't able mount a comeback."

Kayce Walker, who went 1-for-2 with two walks, extended her hit streak to six games and on-base streak to eight.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as Liz Paul walked the leadoff batter and Logan Hall doubled off the left field wall to put a pair runners on with no outs. Kenney then delivered a three-run homer to center made it 3-0.

Courtney Repka came on in relief, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out five. Paul (8-7) gave up three runs, two hits and one walk in 0.0 innings of work.

Baylor looked to mount a comeback in the sixth, as Walker led off with a walk and reached second on an error at second following a fielder's choice from Holly Holl. With two on and no out, Shelbi Redfearn grounded into a 4-3 double play for two outs. A Megan Turk walk put runners at the corners, but a well-hit liner from Jordan Strickland to center was caught to end the threat.

The Lady Bears kept the pressure on in the seventh, plating a run. Kelsi Kettler began the inning with a single to left but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice from pinch hitter Kaitlyn Thumann. Sarah Crockett stepped in to pinch hit and delivered a big double down the left field line to put runners at second and third with one out. Kathy Shelton grounded out to first for the second out, but a wild pitch with Walker at the plate scored Thumann from third to cut the Tech lead to two before a grounder to third ended the game.

Cara Custer (22-8) picked up the win, going 7.0 innings, giving up five hits, one run, walking four and striking out five.

Baylor and Texas Tech will resume the second game of the series on Saturday at noon.
