Wright Quotes NEW YORK - Baylor's duo of 2011 Heisman Trophy-winning QB Robert Griffin III and IR Kendall Wright were selected in the 2012 NFL Draft first round Thursday. As expected, Griffin III was selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins, while Wright was selected No. 20 by the Tennessee Titans.
It is the second consecutive year and only the third time in the 77-year history of the draft that Baylor had two players' names called during the first round. In 2011, DT Phil Taylor was taken with the No. 21 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns and OL Danny Watkins was taken two picks later by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 23 overall selection.
Griffin III is the first Baylor QB drafted in the first round since 1954 when Cotton Davidson was drafted with the No. 5 overall pick by the Baltimore Colts.
From 1966 to 2008, Baylor had five first-round picks. Since then, Baylor has five first-round selections in the last four years - Jason Smith (2009), Taylor (2011), Watkins (2011), Griffin III (2012) and Wright (2012).
Griffin III is the ninth Baylor player selected by the Redskins all-time and the first since DB Charles Bell was selected in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. RG3 is the first rookie Baylor quarterback to be drafted by the Redskins. Washington previously selected QB Adrian Burk in the 1951 NFL Draft, but Burk was eligible for selection after having played one season for the original Baltimore Colts, a team that folded following the 1950 season and had all of its players placed in the 1951 NFL Draft.
Wright, RG3's top offensive target at Baylor, is the first Baylor receiver drafted in the first round since Lawrence Elkins was taken with the 10th overall pick in the 1965 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. The Pittsburg, Texas, speedster is the first Baylor receiver to be drafted since David Gettis in 2010 (Round 6, No. 198 selection).
Wright is just the fourth player drafted by the Tennessee organization in the Modern Draft Era (since AFL-NFL merger in 1970) and the first since the team changed its nickname to the Titans. Three Baylor players were drafted when the team was known as the Houston and Tennessee Oilers. Including AFL draft picks, fourteen Baylor players have been drafted by the Titans/Oilers (tied with Oklahoma for the second-most).
With two days and six rounds remaining, Baylor is projected to have at least three players drafted in the first four rounds for the first time since 1987 (three in first three rounds). There's only been two instances when three or more Baylor players have been chosen in the first four rounds of the NFL Draft - 1959 (four in first three rounds / three in first two rounds) and 1987 (four in first four rounds / three in first three rounds).
Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2012 NFL Draft will be held Friday beginning at 6 p.m. CDT on ESPN and NFL Network.
