Baseball Swept at Oklahoma, 12-6

May 13, 2012 NORMAN, Okla. - Baylor baseball dropped the series finale at Oklahoma, 12-6, on Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. With the loss, the Bears suffered their first series sweep since May 2, 2010.
Baylor (39-11, 18-3 Big 12) had won nine consecutive Big 12 series and hadn't been swept in its last 22 overall series since Texas completed a sweep on May 2, 2010. The Bears have already wrapped up the Big 12 regular-season championship.
"One of the difficult things to do in competition is tip your hat to the other side. I tip my hat, and I think we all tip our hats to the OU guys," head coach Steve Smith said. "They played well, they competed well, and they pitched it well. We were challenged here in about every way a baseball team can be challenged.
Oklahoma (33-19, 13-10 Big 12) knocked 15 hits, tying the most allowed by Baylor this season, and used a four-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Jake Miller and Logan Vick both went 3-for-4 to lead the Bears to 13 hits. Vick had two doubles to give him a Big 12-leading 20 on the year, and Cal Towey and Josh Ludy added two hits apiece. Ludy hit his Big 12-best seventh home run in league play.
Tyler Bremer (5-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings in his first Big 12 start. Sooners' reliever Damien Magnifico (2-1) picked up the win by allowing three runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of relief.
OU jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning, but Bremer stranded a pair of runners in scoring position and the Bears answered with three runs in their next trip to the plate.
Ludy launched a solo homer leading off the second inning, Towey had a RBI triple and Miller added a RBI double to give the Bears a 3-1 lead, but Oklahoma responded with two runs in the bottom of the second after an infield single and a double that fell on the left side of the infield after the ball was lost in the sun.
The Bears went back in front when Vick's RBI single scored Max Muncy in the third, but OU took the lead for good with a three-run fifth, and the Sooners added two insurance runs to take an 8-4 lead to the eighth.
Baylor got four consecutive hits with one out in the eighth to load the bases and put the potential tying run on base. Reliever Jake Fisher got pinch hitter Steve DalPorto to line out to right for a sacrifice fly and induced an inning-ending grounder from Nathan Orf, and Oklahoma broke the game open with four runs on two hits in the eighth. Fisher picked up his first save of the season with 1.2 innings of perfect relief.
"I really am proud of the way we played," Smith said. "I wish we would've played a little better, and I wish we could've gotten a few more things done today on the mound, because the guys were fighting so hard when we got it back to a two-run game. Give OU credit, they're not going away easily, but we didn't go away easily either. This was more about the way they played than it was about the way we played. They played it well and deserved to win the ballgames, so we just tip our hats and move on."
The Bears return to home for their last two regular-season games at Baylor Ballpark this year. Baylor hosts UTSA on Tuesday and Texas on Thursday, and both games are scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m. All tickets for Tuesday's game are $3, and the first 4,000 fans at Thursday's game will receive Big 12 Champions t-shirts. Baylor will be presented with the league championship trophy after Thursday's game.
