June 3, 2012

WACO, Texas - Tyler Bremer pitched 6.0 strong innings, and Crayton Bare worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief as Baylor staved off elimination with a 5-2 win against Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Waco Regional at Baylor Ballpark.

With the win, Baylor (46-15) advances to face Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m. Sunday. The Bears will need to win that game to force a winner-take-all championship game at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Bremer (7-1) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 6.0 innings to pick up the win. Kolt Browder worked 0.2 inning of scoreless relief, and Bare took care of the rest, allowing only one hit over the final 2.1 innings for his second save.

"I was particularly proud of Tyler Bremer and how he pitched," head coach Steve Smith said. "The guy a year ago struggled through the whole year, and for him to have a moment like that to be able to walk off the field with a lead in an NCAA regional in front of a home crowd, that is a pretty special time.

"We got as much out of Kolt Browder as I thought we could get, and we got way more out of Crayton Bare than we should have," Smith added. "What he is doing, and has done the last couple of days is pretty special."

Logan Vick went 4-for-5 and drove in Baylor's first three runs in the game, while Josh Ludy had another multi-hit game, finished 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Jake Miller and Dan Evatt added two hits apiece for the Bears.

ORU (38-25) starting pitcher Alex Gonzalez (6-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Reliever Joe Spring finished out the game and allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings.

ORU took an early lead when Logan Domenico hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first for a double. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and after Bremer got the second out with the strikeout, Jose Trevino knocked a RBI single.

Bremer then faced only two batters over the minimum through his next 5.1 innings, and the Bears took the lead for good with two runs in the third.

Jake Miller led off with a double, and the Bears had runners on the corners with no out when Miller beat the throw to third on Adam Toth's sacrifice bunt. Nathan Orf followed with a grounder back to the mound, and Gonzalez had Miller in a rundown heading home, but Miller stayed in the pickle long enough to allow Toth to reach third base and Orf to advance to second. That proved crucial, as Vick followed with a two-run single to give Baylor a 2-1 lead.

The Bears added two insurance runs in the seventh after Miller led off with a bunt single, Orf drew a one-out walk, and Miller scored when Vick beat out a potential double play grounder. Ludy followed with a RBI double down the right-field line to put Baylor in front 4-1.

Bremer issued a four-pitch walk leading off the seventh, and that run came around to score after two wild pitches, but Browder and Bare combined to hold ORU scoreless the rest of the way.

Baylor capped the scoring in the eighth when Evatt led off with a triple off the wall in right-center field and Cal Towey delivered a sacrifice fly.

Bare worked around a one-out walk in the eighth with a double-play grounder, and he retired three straight batters to close out the win after allowing a single leading off the ninth.

Baylor is expected to start freshman right-handed pitcher Austin Stone in Sunday's nightcap against Dallas Baptist. The Patriots are countering with freshman right-hander Jay Calhoun. First pitch is at 7 p.m., and all games of the Waco Regional can be watched free online through www.baylorbears.com/wacoregional.
