WACO, Texas - Youth was served on Friday night at the Ferrell Center before a crowd of 1,118, as Baylor's (1-0) freshmen helped guide the Bears to a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-20, 25-19) of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-1) on day one of the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic.

"Tonight was a great chance to get our young players in there and see how they would respond," head coach Jim Barnes said. "I thought they did a great job and we were dominant at the net."

Baylor's freshmen of Laura Jones (6), Thea Munch-Søegaard (4), Adrien Richburg (2), Sam Hill (2) and Kristin Fitzpatrick (1) accounted for 59 percent (16-of-27) of the team's kills. Six players registered at least three blocks, as Richburg led the way with six, while the Bears' defense totaled 16 team blocks on the night.

BU was in control from the get-go, dominating the first set 25-11, forcing the Islanders to a -.097 hitting percentage. Behind the serving of freshman Mackenzie Mayo, the Bears reeled off six-straight points to gain a 15-7 advantage and never looked back.

Senior Kate Harris totaled 15 assists in two sets of work, giving way to freshman Amy Rosenbaum in the final set, who recorded eight.

The Bears held an 18-9 advantage in the second set, but the Islanders battled back to a three-point deficit at 23-20. However, that was as close as they could get, as Baylor closed out the final two points for the 25-20 win.

Sophomore Adri Nora's three kills and two blocks helped lead the way in set three, as she and Hill accounted for four points apiece in the 25-19 victory.

"We got a chance to see Nevada and Tulane today, and they look formidable," Barnes said. "We are going to have to step it up again tomorrow if we want to come away with two wins."

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches, beginning with Nevada at 12:30 p.m. and finishing with Tulane at 7 p.m.
