NEW ORLEANS, La. - Baylor (12-1) won its eighth-straight match with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 27-25, 25-21) over UTEP (4-7) Saturday morning on day two of the Katy Trosclair Memorial Tournament. The 12-1 mark matches the best start to a season since the 2009 squad began 17-1.
"Our serve/receive was much better and we got off to a great start," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We really showed a lot of heart and grit there in set two, and we need to bring the same energy tonight."
Torri Campbell had a stellar match, leading the team with 10 kills, a .474 hitting percentage and five blocks. Adri Nora added nine kills, while Thea Munch-Soegaard had eight kills and a team-high 10 digs.
The Bears swung .326 in the match, their second-highest total this season, marking the third time they hit over .300 on the year.
An 8-1 run spurred the Bears forward in set one, giving them an 18-14 lead they would never relinquish. The offensive attack was on-point in the opener, hitting .577 with no attacking errors. Campbell and Munch-Soegaard led the way with four kills apiece.
Baylor never led in set two until grabbing the 26-25 advantage on a kill from Nora for set-point. The Bears were able to handle the Miners' attack and the set from Harris was right on the money to Dibbern for the 27-25 win. Campbell and Nora each recorded five kills, as the Bears held a 2-0 advantage heading into set three.
Despite a .192 hitting average in set three, the Bears forced UTEP into nine hitting errors and, tied at 20, closed out the set and match on a 5-1 run for the three-set sweep. BU's blocking totaled four of its seven blocks in the final game, led by Campbell's three.
Baylor will wrap up tournament play against host Tulane tonight at 7 p.m.
