WACO, Texas- With little room for error, stout pitching guided Baylor to a 1-0 win over Texas on Saturday night at Baylor Ballpark. Bears (23-20, 10-6 Big 12) starter Austin Stoneled the way with six dominant innings, striking out a career-best 10 Longhorns (22-19, 5-12 Big 12).
Backed by a bases-loaded walk from Lawton Langfordin the fourth inning, Stone continued his outstanding performance in Big 12 play. He had his full repertoire on display, and it was evident early on as the first two batters he faced went down looking. Improving to 3-2 on the season, he tied his win total from a year ago while giving up just four hits and three walks. All three wins have come during conference action as he has a 1.69 ERA in 26.2 innings.
"I thought Austin was really good," said BU Head Coach Steve Smith. "I thought Austin was impressive with what he did today. The circumstances were different than last week, and obviously the room for error was none. We'll take the wins any way we can get them."
Texas had three scoring chances and each time Stone stayed strong. In the second, he stranded a one-out double with another looking strikeout. He had a close call in the fourth after a single and walk as Brooks Marlow flew out to the warning track in right field - a ball that initially looked like it was headed over the fence for a three-run homer. In the sixth, an HBP and single were nullified on a swinging strikeout.
Marlow's third time up against Stone resulted in another hard hit ball, this time a double, and led to his departure. Josh Michalec came on and induced a huge inning-ending 1-6-3 double play that featured a nifty turn by Jake Miller at second and a short-hop scoop at first by Steve DalPorto. Michalec also wiggled out of a jam in the eighth after allowing runners to get on first and third, striking out Ty Marlow.
For the second straight game, Crayton Barewas the last man on the mound for Baylor. The lefty struck out two of the three batters he faced en route to earning his second save.
"Crayton's the best guy we had available down there," said Smith. "I thought he was very cool, very calm and just executed. I thought he was better tonight than he was last night. That's who we are: guys who compete well."
Dillon Peters (4-3) took the loss for Texas after surrendering one run on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.
The teams finish the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT as BU RHP Ryan Smith(1-3, 4.64 ERA) faces UT RHP Nathan Thornhill (2-4, 2.51 ERA).
