LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor salvaged the last game of the last Big 12 regular season series as the Bears erupted for a season-high run total in a 15-8 win over Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
The win gave Baylor 27 for the season and 12 in league play, marking the 29th season since 1977 with 27 or more wins and 15th time in 17 Big 12 seasons with 12 or more wins.
Baylor (27-25, 12-11 Big 12) took advantage of a season-high 12 walks and added 11 hits as it scored five in the first inning and put the game on ice with eight in the fifth. The five-run first was the highest scoring first inning all season and since doing the same against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on April 18, 2012 in Waco.
Seniors Jake Miller and Nathan Orf came through in a large way in their last regular season game. Miller went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI along with three runs scored and two doubles. He delivered a three-run double to get Baylor going in the first and a two-run single in the prosperous fifth. Orf went 2-for-5 with a career-high-tying four RBI along with two runs, a triple and walk. He drove in the game's first run on a single and cleared the bases with his fifth-inning triple.
"[We got clutch hits when we needed them] very much unlike the day before," said BU Head Coach Steve Smith. "We clearly got some big hits and took the ball fours when we needed to. Jake had a big day. Up and down the lineup, we seemed pretty locked in."
Earning the win in relief was Crayton Bare (6-2). In a gutsy effort, he threw four innings while allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts. The decision marked Bare's fifth win in Big 12 play this season, tying the Baylor single season record for relief wins in league play.
Bare had to step in for starter Austin Stone, who struggled for the first time in a while. Prior to the game he had three straight starts with six or more innings and three or less runs allowed, but he gave up four to the Red Raiders (25-28, 9-15 Big 12) in two innings on two hits and five walks.
"Perseverance is more important than talent sometimes," said Smith. "Offensively, it was a good day. It was a tough day for pitchers on both sides. The strike zone was minute. I thought Austin let it beat him early in the game. He came out really sharp in the first inning, but as soon as a borderline pitch was called a ball it went downhill from there, which was disappointing. Crayton and Josh [Michalec] seemed to manage the difficulty of it pretty well."
Texas Tech starter Corey Taylor (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout in 3.1 innings.
Due to Baylor's travel schedule, the game was called short after eight innings as the game lasted three hours and 31 minutes.
Depending on the results of the rest of Saturday and Sunday's Big 12 action, Baylor could finish as high as third or as low as seventh in the league standings heading into the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship. The tournament will take place May 22-26 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla.
