OKLAHOMA CITY - Baylor entered the ninth inning with a 9-8 lead but was unable to withstand a five-run rally by Kansas State in a 13-9 loss on Friday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Bears now have no chance to reach the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title game.
"I would like to congratulate K-State," said BU Head Coach Steve Smith. "Brad (Hill) has done a really great job and they have a really good club. They just competed today. I like that and the way they play the game. I thought they played the game hard and they played to win."
Baylor (27-27) had just taken a 9-8 lead on a one-out bases-loaded HBP by Cal Towey in the bottom of the eighth, but failed to add to it, and it proved costly.
With Josh Michalec pitching in relief, Kansas State (41-16) started a rally with a one-out single by Tanner Witt. After a walk to Shane Conlon, the Bears went to Ryan Smith but he issued another walk and then allowed a two -run single to Jon Davis. A foul out later, Smith hit a batter before Doug Ashby came in and gave up back-to-back singles to score three runs, leaving too large a deficit for Baylor to overcome.
"Today was tough and disappointing," Smith said. "I thought we did enough things offensively to win the game, and honestly, K-State helped us quite a bit with base on balls and a couple of missed plays. We were productive with outs, but we could never really get the big hit with guys on base."
Prior to the 9-8 lead, the Bears scored the first five runs of the game and looked as if they would cruise behind starter Max Garner, who retired his first seven batters and nine of the first 10 he faced.
But then KSU ran off four straight hits to start the fourth and chased Garner from the game. With two runs already in, the Wildcats scored two more off Crayton Bare on a groundout and wild pitch.
Baylor answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Towey RBI walk and Jake Miller sacrifice fly. However, the 7-4 lead did not stand long.
With runners on second and third and one out after a single and double off Bare, Blair DeBord scored a run on a groundout for KSU. Following a walk, Lance Miles singled in a run to force Baylor to bring in Michalec, who was met with a two-run double by Ross Kivett to give the Wildcats a brief 8-7 lead.
Logan Brown tied the game nearly by himself as he led off the sixth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. However, the run turned out to be insignificant after KSU's huge ninth.
Michalec (4-5) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in 2.2 innings. Meanwhile, KSU reliever Gerardo Esquivel (1-2) picked up the win by giving up no runs and two walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Baylor closes Big 12 Championship pool play tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT against Texas Tech as the Bears hope to put one last win on the board in hopes of getting an at-large big into the NCAA Tournament with a record over .500.
"Regardless of the outcome, [already being eliminated from the title game] didn't bother us," said Smith as Oklahoma's win over Texas Tech prior to Baylor's game ended any chance for the Bears to win their pool. After you lose the first game here you really aren't playing to go to the championship in this format. We have a lot to play for and tomorrow our guys will have a lot to play for. I don't think our guys have to look for reasons to play hard. That isn't who they are."
