Women's Tennis Hosts USTA/ITA Texas Regional

WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will have a total of four players competing in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted at the Hurd Tennis Center Thursday through Monday.

"We are very excited to once again host the Texas Regional Championships," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It is one of the premier collegiate events of the fall. It will provide our players with a great opportunity to play against the best competition in the state."

The singles and doubles champions from each of the 12 regions around the country will go on to play in the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships from Nov. 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

The Lady Bears will have three players in the 128-player singles draw, as well as two pairs in the 64-team doubles draw. Kelley Anderson, No. 37 Kiah Generette and 78th-ranked Blair Shankle will all compete in the singles draw, while Anderson and Shankle will team together for the doubles draw. Generette will be joined by Rachael James-Baker for the doubles competition.

Anderson, a freshman, is 2-1 on the young season and will face Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.

Generette, No. 5, and Shankle, No. 16, are both seeded in the event and will receive first-round byes in singles.

Generette, 3-1 on the year, will face Texas A&M's Mason Strickland at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, while Shankle, 2-1 during fall play, takes on the winner of Eva Dench (Texas State) and Mila Milanovic (Sam Houston State) at 2:30 p.m. on the first day of action.

In doubles, Anderson and Shankle, the event's No. 3 seed, will have a first-round bye and will then play the winner of Reegan Greenwood and Katia Stavroulaki (UTPA) and Rachel Sadiq and Taryn Strahl (Incarnate Word) on Friday at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, Generette and James-Baker will face Christine Foote and Verena Scott of UTA on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Both of Baylor's doubles team's will be playing together competitively for the first time.
