Nov. 14, 2014 WACO, Texas - Following a seven-event fall schedule, the Baylor women's tennis team heads into its off-season with a wealth of experience and a clearer focus on the areas that need improvement.
"We're proud of the effort our team has put in this fall," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I don't think any of us are completely satisfied, but we are moving in the right direction."
Freshman Kelley Anderson and sophomore Blair Shankle led the team with six singles wins apiece in fall action, but there were also several other outstanding performances over the last few months.
The team's lone senior, Ema Burgic, was ranked No. 55 to enter the year and produced a 2-1 mark in collegiate action. Burgic shined in three pro tournaments as she won her way through qualifying and into the main draw at both the Red Rock Open (ITF $50,000 Pro Circuit) and the Rock Hill Rocks Open (ITF $25,000 Pro Circuit). All told, Burgic was 7-3 in pro events and recorded wins over Jacqueline Cako (No. 514 in WTA), Hayley Carter, who is No. 3 in the ITA, Maria (No. 298 in WTA) and Gioia Barbieri (No. 181 in WTA).
Shankle, ranked No. 78 entering the season, played far above that level throughout the fall. She beat 99th-ranked Anna Mamalat of Texas A&M to open the year and then upset No. 13 Breaunna Addison to advance to the quarterfinals of the regional championships. That performance netted Shankle an at-large selection to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Transfer Rachael James-Baker had arguably the sharpest fall season of anyone on the squad as she went 5-1 in singles action. The 117th-ranked James-Baker's biggest win of the fall was a straight-set upset of No. 15 Zoe Scandalis of USC.
Anderson lost her first match as a Lady Bear and then rolled to five straight victories. The final three wins in that streak pushed, the Roanoke, Texas, product through to the round of 16 of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional.
Meanwhile, the highest ranked Lady Bear coming into the fall, 37th-ranked Kiah Generette, racked up a 5-4 mark.
Freshman Eliza Long battled injuries throughout the fall and tallied a 3-6 record, while gaining valuable experience.
In doubles play, returners Burgic and Shankle, who were ranked No. 37, opened the year by going 3-0 at the Under Armour Kick-Off in their lone fall event together.
Shankle also had doubles success with Anderson as the tandem went 3-1 in fall play, including a trip to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
Baylor will now be in its off-season until starting its dual-match season on Jan. 15 versus Georgia.
"The key for us this off-season is to raise our ceiling as a team," Scrivano said. "That can only happen with individual growth."
