BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement:
"Prairie View A&M really did a good job of controlling the tempo tonight. Defensively, we were good. I was disappointed in our execution on the offensive end - 18 turnovers are way, way, way too many. So that was the most disappointing part of the night. Second thing is free-throw shooting. You come off a game where you shoot 80 percent, and then tonight you shoot 58 percent, and I don't know how many of them are front-ends or one-and-ones. But we have got to be a team that shoots 75 percent or better. Those two areas were the biggest areas of concern or disappointment tonight. But again, I thought Prairie View did a good job in controlling tempo and making sure we never really could extend past that 15, 14 number."
On Rico Gathers' performance:
"It was great to see him rebound but at this point he was 4-for-10. He works too hard on his game to shoot 4-for-10. He had some opportunities. I mean, he needs to be shooting 60 percent from the field. A lot of those are those layups that we have to finish. So, I know he's upset with that but it was great to see his activity on the glass."
On getting the ball to the inside:
"I think we've played two games now where, defensively, the teams are a little different, real aggressive, which gives you driving lanes, but don't necessarily always give you opportunities to run offense as much. I thought we definitely, when we got the ball down there, we had some success. But again, we were 8-for-13 from the free-throw line, and we need 10-for-13 or 11-for-13. I know we can get better, we will get better. The most important thing is that we won, and we can keep getting better with winning. This week will be really important for us. Stephen F. Austin is a team that won 32 games last year, and 29 straight. Defensively, they really pressure and press and cause turnovers, just like South Carolina, like Prairie View did. And, at the same time, offensively they have a lot of weapons and really shoot the ball and pass the ball well. It'll be a grind-out, tough couple of possessions game the whole way."
Senior F Rico Gathers
On the being inspired from the last game:
"I wouldn't say all that, but it definitely made me come out with a chip on my shoulder. I just had to come out there and be the man that I am. I am a great rebounder. So, I had to let that be known from the tip."
On playing the post area:
"From the jump we were getting the ball inside early. We wanted to work the ball inside because it opens things up for the outside."
Junior F Taurean Prince
On coming off the bench and giving a spark:
"My mind says to do whatever the coach asks me to, whether it's coming off the bench or starting, it doesn't matter to me."
On his performance tonight:
"I'm just trying to get my flow back on the season and trying to find my spots on the floor where I'm best at. I haven't figured it out yet, but it'll be figured out soon."
