BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Scott Drew, Baylor Head Coach
Opening Statement
"Positives tonight: good defense, 35 percent, good rebounding, good assist-to-turnover ratio. Negatives: with 22 offensive rebounds you have to score more than nine second chance points. We have to finish a lot better around the rim, but that was the only negative that stood out."
On Rico's night
"I thought Rico was very active. I know he's disappointed he didn't make more free throws and finish better around the rim. But at the same time he did have 13 rebounds and 23 points. It was his work on the boards in transition. We did want to get the ball inside but credit to him for getting eight offensive rebounds."
On Lester's game
"I thought he played a really good game. He had a lot of poise and was really good defensively."
On the team's play as a whole
"I'm very pleased. When we were up 60-32 I thought up to that point we played really well, besides not finishing. Then we went on a lull when they went on a 10-2 run, which was disappointing. Defensively we let down our guard, and credit to them for picking up the intensity and making shots. Besides that four to six minute period I thought we were very good tonight."
Rico Gathers - Baylor Junior, F
On rebounding tonight
"I was just going out there, playing and having fun, competing with my brothers and stuff like that. I was just trying to leave it all on the floor."
On finishing
"I really try to focus on my finishing. But if I'm missing them, I can't let that get in the way of what I do best, and that's rebounding"
On playing with Lester as point "I think the main thing with him is just getting confidence. I looked at his stats and saw that he has a real high assist-to-turnover ratio, so he knows what he's doing with the ball in his hands. He knows how to get people involved, and he's a smart player. I've been telling him since the summer time that he is going to be real special for the program."
Lester Medford - Junior, G
On Rico's rebounding
"When he's working hard, I try to get him a few extra passes, whether he's running the floor, or dumping it in when he's posting up, or when I penetrate and draw his man and just try to dump it off to him so he can stay hot with the hot hand and get some easy layups for us."
On his improvement
"I felt like it was my best game. My teammates made it a lot easier on me by staying wide and getting shots for me. They made some good shots. After the last game I needed to just relax. The coaches told me to just relax and play my game and have fun out there."
Texas Southern Head Coach Mike Davis
On playing a game like tonight's...
"Well, what we really wanted to do was come in here and just try to get better as a team, and run our stuff against a good zone defense, and unfortunately we came out and played really afraid. We don't want to be afraid because no one expects you to really win these games. It's all about getting better as a team, and I thought we took a step back tonight. We played a lot better against SMU and Indiana than we did tonight."
On cutting it down from 30 to 20 and not giving up...
"Well, they just kind of let up a little bit. It wasn't anything we did, they just relaxed a little bit. We made some baskets and they put the other guys back in and took it back up. But, we didn't get better tonight, and we didn't give them a good game. We wanted to at least make it challenging for them. but from the jump ball when we made the first layup, that was it."
