THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - Headlined by an upset victory for Rachael James-Baker, the Baylor women's tennis team closed out the Under Armour Kick-Off event on Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Playing her first ranked opponent of the season, the 117th-ranked James-Baker made quick work of No. 15 Zoe Scandalis of USC, capturing a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory. The win pushed the BU newcomer to a 3-0 record in singles for the weekend.

Both Ema Burgic and Kelley Anderson recorded victories on the final day of competition as well. The 55th-ranked Burgic produced a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Madison Westby, while Anderson carded a 6-2, 6-3 win over USC's Meredith Xepoleas. Xepoleas is ranked ninth in the ITA's freshman/newcomer rankings.

BU's only singles loss on the day came from the previously unbeaten Blair Shankle, who suffered a 7-6(3), 6-2 setback to USC's 38th-ranked Giuliana Olmos.

Baylor started off the morning by going 1-1 in doubles. The 37th-ranked pairing of Burgic and Shankle downed Texas A&M's Rachel Pierson and Rutuia Bhosale, 8-3. Meanwhile, James-Baker and Anderson fell to Stefani Hristov and Eva Paalma of Texas A&M, 8-2.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Burgic and Shankle went 3-0 in doubles competition on the weekend.
• James-Baker was the only BU player to go undefeated on the weekend.
• Anderson, Burgic and Shankle were all 2-1 in singles play.

TOP QUOTE #1
"Overall, the team played some solid tennis. There was some great tennis at times, some good tennis and then some patches where the level wasn't where it needs to be. We are going in the right direction and we now have to move past this weekend and get back to preparing for the future." - Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano on the weekend

TOP QUOTE #2
"Rachael's consistency has gone up since she has been here. We knew she was capable of playing at a high level, but she just has to put in the work week in and week out. This is a glimpse of what she is capable of." - Scrivano on Rachael James-Baker's win

WHAT'S NEXT
Next weekend, two individuals will be back in action as Eliza Long travels to the Miami Invite in Coral Gables, Fla., for action Friday through Sunday, while Ema Burgic heads to Las Vegas, N.V., for the Red Rock Open, starting on Sunday.
