THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas - The No. 6-ranked Baylor equestrian team defeated Tennessee-Martin (UTM) 9-7 in the first round of the Willis Invitational on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center with the western team propelling the Bears to advance.

The round robin featuring Baylor, Fresno State, SMU and UTM means that only one team will leave the competition with a victory whereas the remainder of Baylor's meets in 2014-15 are head-to-head competitions. With Baylor's win over UTM, the Bears move on to face FSU, and the two teams began the second round with equitation of the flat and reining.

In Baylor's win over UTM, the Bears tied 2-2 in equitation over fences before the Skyhawks took a 3-1 win over BU in flat to give the visitors a 5-3 advantage.

However, Baylor's 3-1 wins in both reining and horsemanship on the western side gave the Bears the victory.

Fresno State upset No. 10 SMU, 7-6 in the first round, and the Bulldogs will conclude their meet with Baylor Saturday before the Bears move on to face the Mustangs. UTM and SMU began two rounds of competition in fences and horsemanship Friday night and will conclude Saturday.
