BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement:
"I thought the crowd was great. The whiteout was a great idea. The students brought a lot of energy. I'm really pleased with how we handled the ball, only nine turnovers, 44 rebounds, and then we really got some high percentage shots, especially first half. Second half we didn't make as many threes, but the offensive rebounding really kept us in the game."
On Kenny Chery's toughness:
"Toughness to comeback, second thing he is 4-for-16, so it's not like this was last week's game against Kansas where he was really feeling it and knocking down shots. To hit that shot after not being as efficient from the field as he normally is I thought that showed a lot of poise, character and guts. I know with our team there is no one we would rather have with the ball at the end of the game."
On getting the win in a tough game:
"I think that's the Big 12. Our last three games have come down to the last minute, one went to overtime and two were decided in the last few seconds. That's what makes the league so good. There is no off night. There is no night when you can play bad and get away with a win. (I am) pleased at how hard we competed. Again this is a very good Iowa State team, and very potent as you saw offensively. Even though when we were up 16-to-1, we knew how good they are in transition and shooting threes. We knew that was a five-point lead for a different game. "
Senior PG Kenny Chery
On the game-winning shot:
"That's exactly what we were looking for. That was the play coach wanted us to execute. It worked pretty well."
On the game plan at the end of the game:
"We were just trying to get the best shot possible, and it didn't work out in our favor. They came back and they had a 1 point lead. We just have to execute, keep faith in God and keep moving on. "
Junior F Rico Gathers
On out-rebounding Iowa State:
"Any time you play a team like Iowa State where most the guys play on the perimeter, you have to be able to go on the inside to get those guys in foul trouble. Everybody was attacking and we looked good doing it tonight."
On playing with Jonathan Motley:
"J-Mot's length definitely played a factor, especially in the second half. He hit some pretty clutch shots and I was real proud of him for that. I just wanted to go in there and do my work early. It started in the first half for me and took over in the second."
IOWA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Iowa State Head Coach Fred Hoiberg
On his team's slow start to the game:
"The start of the game is what stuck with me. The two stretches that got us were the start of the first half and the end of the first half. We get down 16 right out of the shoot, and then we cut it to two, but then we walk into the locker room at half down 12. For whatever reason, we weren't very good out of the locker room tonight, and especially on the road, you need to get off to better starts. We talk about it all the time, teams make runs, but it takes so much energy to get back into the game to where you need to be to give yourself a chance to win. That's definitely where the game was lost tonight."
On his team's defense in the first half:
"Our defense was poor. We didn't rotate at all out of our doubles so we had to scrap that and go to single coverage down there. Obviously, we're giving up size and weight to that team. And our rebounding [was poor] - giving those guys that many second-chance opportunities, including a key one on their second to last possession where (Johnathan) Motley got the put-back that was a key as well."
On his teams fight in back-to-back tough road games:
"I'll say this, after the initial start, I was proud of our guys and how they battled back. They clawed and scratched and did everything they could to give us a chance to win. Unfortunately, you look back at that start and how we got out of the gate, it's tough to fight back from that, but our guys did it. We got a lead, but unfortunately we couldn't get the stop. (Kenny) Chery hit one heck of a shot."
On his team getting out rebounded:
"It looked to me like we weren't hitting. You got to hit, sustain and go get it. And (Rico) Gathers, look he's averaging eight offensive rebounds in league play; he's a monster down there. Motley has great length, so that makes it even more important to make contact on those plays."
