Jan. 16, 2015 WACO, Texas - Newly hired Baylor head volleyball coach
Ryan McGuyre announced the hiring of his two full-time assistant coaches Friday. McGuyre promoted
Samantha Erger, the director of BU volleyball operations to full-time assistant, while naming Trevor Johnson from Concordia University-Irvine as his top assistant.
McGuyre, hired Dec. 24, reunited with Johnson Friday with the hire, as Johnson played for McGuyre at California Baptist from 2002-2005, and he served on his CBU staff as an assistant coach in two different stints from 2007-2011.
Since then, Johnson has had head-coaching stints for both the men's and women's programs at CUI where he led the men's team to an NAIA national championship in 2013 in the program's first year of existence. In 2014, his women's program posted a record of 34-4 and reached the NAIA national tournament.
""I have been a part of seeing Trevor win a national championship as an athlete. We have won championships together as coaches, and Trevor has gone on to win more championships," McGuyre said. "Wherever he goes, the program wins. Having started a program from scratch and winning a championship as a head coach in its first year is incredibly impressive. His experience as a head coach has prepared him for the demands involved in leading our Bears to the highest levels of success."
"Sam" Erger spent one season on Jim Barnes' staff as director of operations in the 2014 season for the Bears. Prior to that, Erger was the head coach at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas where she led the 2013 team to a 29-9 overall record, an NTJCAC Conference title, and ended a 12-year Hill College drought by reaching the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
She had a two-year graduate assistant stint at the University of Findlay (Ohio) to begin her coaching career. On the floor she played NCAA Division I ball for Bowling Green State University as a setter, and she left the school ranked fifth all-time in career assists.
"Sam possesses an intense and fiery passion guided by wisdom and an elite-level drive that few have ever seen," McGuyre said. "Sam is the complete package. In the gym she will keep our standards high and tolerate nothing less. As a recruiter, her work ethic has already garnered the respect of the top clubs and schools in Texas."
McGuyre only has to fill his vacant director of volleyball operations position to complete his staff.
