THE RUNDOWN
LEXINGTON, Ky. - For a second-straight week, sophomore
Annie Rhodes bettered her own school record in the pole vault to lead the Baylor track and field teams at the Rod McCravy Memorial Friday.
Rhodes placed sixth in the competition, while clearing 13-10.5 [4.23m]. Last week at the Texas A&M Team Invitational, Rhodes had cleared 13-9.25 [4.20m] to pass the school record of 13-2.5 [4.03m], which she established in her freshman season.
The women's distance medley relay team of Mariah Kelly, Raena Rhone, Olicia Williams and Maggie Montoya came close to setting a school record of their own with a third-place showing in 11:09.35. Just 2.35 seconds away from the school mark, the quartet likely would have had the record, but a dropped baton on the first exchange cost them a few extra seconds. Friday's time was still the fifth-fastest in school history.
BU had three other top-five finishers on the day as freshman Kevin Harris placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.40. Lauren Cook tied a personal-best in the high jump by clearing 5-9.75 [1.77m] to be fourth.
Meanwhile in the pentathlon competition, Jenna Pfeiffer tallied the fifth-most points in school history, 3,763, to be fourth overall. In the individual events, Pfeiffer set personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles (9.21) and the long jump (17-2.75 [5.25m]).
TOP QUOTE #1
"Overall, it was a good opening day for us that we hope to build off of for tomorrow. Lauren (Cook) had a big jump, while Jenna (Pfeiffer) had a great day overall and Annie (Rhodes) getting another school record was impressive. Our DMR group was good, but a drooped stick on the first exchange cost us three or four seconds. However, it was great to see them stay focused and run a great race." - head coach Todd Harbour
