WACO, Texas - The sixth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will host four matches this weekend with doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
On Friday, Baylor will take on Pittsburgh at 3 p.m., followed by a match against Texas-Pan American at 7 p.m. On Sunday, BU will face No. 25 Tulsa at 1 p.m. and then host Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.
"This weekend gives us an opportunity to play a lot of tennis," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "The more we are on the tennis court, the better our players get. We just have to take it as one match at a time and one point at a time. We will just break it into smaller parts, and we will grow because of it."
BU enters the weekend with a 2-0 record on the season, after defeating then-No. 5 Virginia, 6-1, on Saturday and then-No. 5 Georgia, 4-3, the Sunday prior. The Lady Bears are led by 49th-ranked Blair Shankle, who has a 2-0 singles record in dual-match play. The 72nd-ranked Ema Burgic is also 2-0 in singles on the season. As a duo, Shankle and Burgic are 2-0 as well.
This will be the first team match for Pittsburgh on the year. Texas-Pan American comes in with a record of 2-1 with wins over Prairie View A&M and Sam Houston State. Baylor is the first ranked opponent for both teams.
Baylor is 3-0 all-time vs. Texas-Pan American. The Lady Bears posted a 6-1 victory over the Broncs last year in Waco. This is the first time Baylor will play Pittsburgh.
The Lady Bears will return for the second doubleheader on Sunday, hosting No. 25 Tulsa at 1 p.m. and Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.
The Golden Hurricane is 5-1 on the season, but lost their only away match of the season - a 5-2 defeat to No. 16 Michigan on Jan. 25. Tulsa will play Pittsburgh on Saturday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis, before playing BU on Sunday.
TU is led by singles player Marcelina Cichon, who is ranked No. 70 in the country.
The Bears lead the all-time series against Tulsa, 4-0, including a 3-0 mark under Scrivano. BU last beat Tulsa on May 12, 2012, 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championships.
Incarnate Word is 0-2 on the season, but will play UTSA on Friday, before coming to Waco on Sunday.
This will be Baylor's first-ever meeting against Incarnate Word.
Prior to the second match each day, the team will host a session of the Baylor Cub Tennis Program. Children 11-years-old and under can come to the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center on Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. to receive free basic tennis instruction.
Live results for the match will be available at BaylorBears.com with a live blog available for each day's opening match.
Following the four-matches in three days, Baylor will host another double-hear on Feb. 8 against Maryland and Prairie View A&M at 1 and 6 p.m., respectively.
