Jan. 7, 2015 NEW ORLEANS - Baylor track and field sprinter Trayvon Bromell was one of 10 athletes named to the 2015 preseason edition of The Bowerman Award watch list, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday.
Last season as a freshman, Bromell became the first BU athlete to even appear on The Bowerman Award watch list. He went on to be one of 10 semifinalists for the honor in 2014. The Bowerman Trophy, which was first awarded in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation.
The St. Petersburg, Fla., product's inaugural season at BU was highlighted by winning the NCAA title in the 100 meters with a new world junior record time of 9.97 on June 13 in Eugene, Ore.
With the victory, Bromell became become Baylor's first NCAA national champion in an individual event at the outdoor meet since Darold Williamson (400 meters) in 2005 and the first freshman to win the 100-meter title since Florida State's Walter Dix in 2005. Overall, he is only the sixth freshman to win the NCAA 100-meter crown and owns the eighth-fastest time for a collegian.
Bromell first appeared on The Bowerman Award watch list on May 21, 2014, after winning the Big 12 100-meter title in 9.77 (4.2) in Lubbock, Texas. He was named the Big 12's Outstanding Freshman after the meet and his time is the third-fastest in NCAA history, regardless of wind.
The sprinter closed out his 2014 season by taking second in the 100 meters at the World Junior Championships, after winning the event at the USA junior meet.
Bromell is one of three sophomores one watch list. The other nine athletes up for the award include: Devon Allen (Oregon), Shawn Barber (Akron), Edward Cheserek (Oregon), Ryan Crouser (Texas), Marquis Dendy (Florida), Dedric Dukes (Florida), Deon Lendore (Texas A&M), Brandon McBride (Mississippi State) and Anthony Rotich (UTEP).
