THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas
- Baylor soccer played to a 1-1 tie with No. 17 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Field. The Bears (8-5-2, 3-1-1) and Red Raiders (8-3-5, 1-2-3) both scored on penalty kicks as BU has now gone undefeated in nine of its last 10 matches.

Baylor dominated possession for most of the game and had more scoring chances (led 22-15 in shots and 6-5 in corners in regulation), but was only able to cash in one time. The lone BU goal came as Bri Campos was fouled in the TTU box in the 26th minute to set up a penalty kick from about 13 yards out. Campos went to the left post for an easy goal.

From there Baylor stayed on the attack until desperation mode kicked in for TTU as the Red Raiders were down 1-0 with three minutes to go. After a few scoring chances, a TTU player was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick with 44 seconds left. Janine Beckie took the PK from about 10 yards out and scored to the left post to knot the game.

In the extra sessions, both teams made easy saves in the first overtime and TTU had the only shot of the second OT.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"We did not allow them to do the things they wanted to do. When they adjusted we were able to adjust as well. We put a lot of pressure on them, created a ton of opportunities -- some days they fall and some days they don't. We'll walk out of here with a quality point and a great tie against a great team." - Head Coach Paul Jobson

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for a 7 p.m. CT tilt at TCU on Friday, Oct. 23.

Baylor Bear Foundation Recap By Hector Castelltort
For the second time in the last three games, a late foul proved costly for the Baylor soccer team. Nine days after giving up a golden goal off a free kick with seven seconds remaining in a 1-0 double-overtime loss at Kansas, the Bears were called for a foul inside the box and gave up a tying penalty kick with 44 seconds left in regulation as 17th-ranked Texas Tech escaped with a 1-1 tie.

Baylor (8-5-2, 3-1-1) held a 1-0 lead for 63 ½ minutes, after Bri Campos blasted in a penalty kick past Tech goalkeeper Lauren Watson. The Red Raiders (8-3-5, 1-2-3) were a player down for the last 35 minutes of regulation and both overtime periods after Cassie Boren got a red-card ejection, but remained aggressive and actually had a 4-2 edge in shots during the 20 extra minutes.

"We did not allow them to do the things they wanted to," Baylor coach Paul Jobson said. "When they adjusted, we were able to adjust as well. We put a lot of pressure on them, created a ton of opportunities. Some days they fall and some days they don't. We'll walk out of here with a quality point and a great tie against a great team."

Campos, one of five seniors honored in a postgame celebration, said the Bears were "resilient for most of the game and the better team for most of the game. It was just (not) being able to put away pieces toward the end."

Also recognized after the game were McKenna Martin, Katie Daigle, Hadley Young and Ashleigh James. "I try not to think (this being my last season), so that I can stay focused on what we're doing," Daigle said. "So, it was just another game for me."

Tech had a couple early chances, but Janine Beckie sailed one high and a shot by Maddy Crabtree was blocked by Precious Akanyirige.

In the 26th minute of the first half, Tech defender Brooke Denesik tackled Campos inside the box, setting up a penalty kick from point-blank range. Campos rifled a shot to the left post, scoring her third goal of the season and 18th of her career.

"All of us seniors just wanted to come up with a win and play our best. That's all we are trying to do," Campos said.

Near the end of the first half, freshman forward Ariel Leach broke through the right side and dribbled past one Tech defender before missing wide left on her first career shot.

"I could not have asked for a better team. We really push," Daigle said. "We did our best, we fought hard, and unfortunately we just couldn't get what we wanted out of this game."

The intensity and physical play was ratcheted up in the first 15 minutes of the second half, with the Red Raiders' Beckie and Deneik both picking up yellow cards and Boren getting the red-card ejection. There were a total of 38 fouls (28 for Baylor, 10 for Tech), including yellow cards on Sarah King and Emory Cason in the first overtime period.

Both teams had chances that they weren't able to capitalize on in the first OT period. Caity Heap was high on a free-kick opportunity, while Baylor's best chance came on a cross by King that Campos headed over the riverside goal.

In the second overtime, Heap was high on the only shot of the period despite three corner kicks.

"That's Big 12 conference play," Jobson said. "Everybody plays hard, everybody wants the victory, and nobody is willing to walk off the field without that. The girls played as hard as they can." The Bears go on the road next weekend, facing TCU (8-7-0, 2-3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in Fort Worth and Texas (7-3-4, 4-1-1) at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, in Austin.

BAYLOR 1, OKLAHOMA 0 - On Friday night, Baylor's defense was solid in a 1-0 shutout of Oklahoma.

"Coming out of halftime, we were able to turn the game around," Jobson said. "We were probably the better team in the second half."

Despite a great defensive strategy, the team as a whole struggled through a scoreless first half. "We started a little slow, a little flat," said freshman Julie James. "Once we got that TV timeout, we just brought in that edge. In the second half, we started bringing that edge that has kept us in all the games we've played so far."

The Bears came into the second half ready to put everything on the line and didn't disappoint. In the 49th minute, Sarah King broke the right side into the box and crossed the ball to James, who thought, "I need to get on the box for this one, because she is going to get it in" as the play was developing. The game-winner was James' fourth goal of the season as King was credited with her 10th assist.

Later in the second half, freshman Lauren Piercy won a rebound, but was fouled by OU defender Angela Boyle just as she was about to put herself in a 1-on-1 situation. The talented freshman was carted off the field with an apparent back injury that kept her out of Sunday's game.

That was not the only scary moment of the game. In the first half, goalkeeper Sarah Martinson hurt her hip as she attempted to clear the ball. She was able to come back and finish the game with two saves.

"It was a physical game. Both teams are very physical teams," Martinson said. "You're going to have some people get hit, injuries happen, and now we just move on and recover."

After taking the lead, the Bears pulled back and played a more defensive game. But they still created some scoring opportunities, with Precious Akanyirige shooting one over the bar.

"Up 1-0 is not a safe lead. Any team like Oklahoma is going to be able to come back," Jobson said. "Our defense does a great job. They do not get enough credit - shutting down players, eliminating the amount of opportunities other teams get. They did a really great job against a good team like Oklahoma."
