WACO, Texas -- Baylor volleyball dropped its second straight conference match at home with a 3-0 loss to Iowa State, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22, Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears (14-8, 2-6 Big 12) struggled offensively as a unit, hitting .119 for 39 kills on 126 attempts. Shelly Fanning led all hitters with 13 kills on 26 swings, a .385 effort in the loss. Katie Staiger and Andie Malloy added nine kills each for the Bears.
The Cyclones (13-6, 6-2) used a big advantage at the net to hand Baylor its third home loss, out blocking the Bears 11.0 to 2.0. It was only the second match all season the Bears failed to record at least three blocks.
Baylor opened up a 4-3 lead early in the first set after a block from Adrien Richburg and Katie Staiger, but Iowa State surged ahead, and BU could never recover. After hitting a match-low .000, the Bears dropped set one 25-19.
BU came back with a vengeance, though. The Bears used kills from Tola Itiola and Katie Staiger to pull ahead, 16-12, and force an Iowa State timeout. The Cyclones ultimately took the set after 12 tie scores and five lead changes, 25-21.
After the break, Baylor fell behind quickly in set three, trailing 20-12. The Bears showed a spark on the offensive end from Fanning and Staiger, but BU could not force a fourth set, falling 25-22.

"We weren't in rhythm, very, very disappointing as far as our execution. We've been battling hard all year in a lot of matches, but Andie was struggling a little bit, as she wasn't quite dialed-in. It wasn't horribly bad, but it was loose enough out there to where we were giving up 2 points every game that we don't usually give up, and at the end of the match that hurt us." --Head Coach Ryan McGuyre

Baylor Volleyball Match Recap

After a nail-biting five-set loss to TCU Wednesday night, the Baylor volleyball team tried to bounce back in Sunday's matchup with Iowa State.
Unfortunately, the Bears (14-8, 2-6 in Big 12) totaled 24 attacking errors and hit just .119 in the match to fall in straight sets to the visiting Cyclones, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22, handing the team its sixth conference loss of the season and third straight at home.
The biggest hole in the Bears' offense was the disappointing performance by senior outside hitter Andie Malloy. She finished the match with nine kills on 46 swings, but 14 attack errors limited the former Iowa State transfer.
"Andie was struggling a little bit. She wasn't quite dialed-in," head coach Ryan McGuyre said.
In the loss, freshman middle hitter Shelly Fanning led all hitters with 13 kills on 26 swings, good enough for a .385 effort. However, no one else could rise to the occasion and put away the ball at the right times. Seven service errors came at wrong moments, as well, and the Iowa State block killed the momentum at the net.
"We've got to keep the ball in the court," outside hitter Katie Staiger said. "We're being aggressive, but the bad part was that we stopped being aggressive and we still missed the court."
The Bears traded points with Iowa State early in the first set, but a couple of attack errors and mishaps separated the two teams and Baylor could never recover. The Cyclones (13-6, 6-2) limited the Bears to a .000 hitting effort in the first frame, winning 25-19.
"We weren't in rhythm, very, very disappointing as far as our execution," McGuyre said. "We've been battling hard all year in a lot of matches, just trying to put some points together. It was loose enough out there to where we were giving up 2 points every game that we don't usually give up, and at the end of the match that hurt us."
The struggle wasn't over for Baylor, though.
While Baylor tallied 16 kills in the second set, the Cyclones only produced one error for a .303 performance. The Bears did lead 16-12 with help from Staiger and middle hitter Tola Itiola, but Baylor gave up the lead late to drop the second set 25-21.
"We had some good moments, but we weren't able to string long runs of points together," outside hitter Katie Staiger said. "There were moments of it, but it wasn't enough."
Set three looked put away pretty quickly with Baylor trailing 20-12, but the Bears weren't ready to go home quite yet. Fanning fired away for five kills down the stretch, but it wasn't enough for Baylor. The Bears fell 25-22 in set three, falling to 8-3 at home.
Next up for the Bears is another difficult challenge as they face seventh-ranked Kansas (19-1, 7-1) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
"We can't let games string together," Staiger said. "Each game is a new match."
