BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
BAYLOR HEAD COACH Kim Mulkey
On offensive strugglesà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"Give UTA credit defensively, but we've got to finish shots. Part of that is probably that it's the first game, part of it is fatigue, and part of it is inexperience. I could list a lot of things that probably created it. You don't get disappointed in the young players that are new. My disappointment is you had three returning players out there that took you to an Elite Eight: one scored zero, one scored zero and one scored two. If we are going to be pretty good that can't happen. We won and we'll move on. We've got to execute better in the half-court. Good teams aren't going to let you run and score all night, they are going to make you execute in the half court. That will get better for us as time goes on. Free throw shooting, we missed way too many free throws. I thought our defense was good. When you hold teams to six points and fourteen in a half, you can't really complain, but we've got to clean up the offensive end." On how UTA's defense disrupted the Lady Bears' offenseà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"They play position defense and they mix it up. They play the one-three-one, they play the two-three. They are not going to out-leap you, they are not going to be more physical than you, but they put themselves in a position just to make the shot a little bit tougher. I knew that coming in. If you look at their season last year, their scoring versus how well they defended, and I thought they did a good job last year. That's what keeps them in games."
On the Lady Bears' defenseà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought we were active. I thought we got a lot of turnovers. I thought our help-side was pretty good. I can think of a few instances where we didn't talk and switch. I thought we had UTA in a lot of what we call a "hot situation" where it is ten under the shot clock and we are switching on everything. When you have that activity on the defensive end, it helps you when you are struggling offensively."
JUNIOR Nina Davis
On how she gets goingà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"My teammates just keep giving me the ball. Even when I miss shots and I am trying to get myself going, they just keep giving me confidence and they tell me to just keep shooting. It was just getting out there and getting back in the flow, but once I got back into my flow, I was fine"
On the new 4 quarters systemà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"It's just different. It's an adjustment and just something that we've got to get used to. I think as the days go on and we play more games, we will all get used to it. Definitely during the long quarters, you are anxious to get back out there. I think there is like two and a half minutes where you are just sitting there fumbling and just waiting for the horn to go off. You just get that long break and you have to stop. You kind of get cold and you have to heat back up again. It's just different, but we'll adjust to it"
JUNIOR Alexis Jones
On getting off to a hot startà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I think I got my shot going in the first quarter, which kept me going. I'm just excited to be out there. I'm just trying to work hard and to do my best, and be the best player I can be." On her high number of minutes tonightà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I am one hundred percent ready to be out there as long as I can to help the team. I'm good and coach just wants to keep me healthy for the rest of the season, because it's a long season and she doesn't want wear and tear or anything on my body."
UTA HEAD COACH KRISTA GERLICH
Opening statementà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought that it was a good challenge for us. Baylor is extremely talented and they are so big inside. We knew that that was going to be difficult for us and their transition game is really tough, too. It was a great environment to play in, a huge stage for our team. Baylor is incredible and I would not be surprised to see them in the Final Four."
On the four quartersà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought it was okay. After our scrimmages, I thought it would speed the game up but I don't know that it did. I do like the fact that we reset the fouls after every quarter, because I do think that it helps you when you are trying to run some man-to-man and be more physical. For the most part, I thought it was fine."
On the fan supportà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
On adjustments coming from this gameà ¢Ã¢' ¬ ¦
"I thought in the first quarter we had some turnovers that were uncharacteristic of us. I think you will see a different team when we play a different team. It is one thing to prepare for your opening game, but it's another thing to prepare for the number five team in the nation in your opening game. I think we will play faster and I think we will shoot better. Baylor makes you shoot it quicker. (Alexis) Prince's length on the perimeter is incredible and that is hard to deal with."
