WACO, Texas - The sixth-ranked Baylor women's team (10-0) knocked off another ranked opponent Sunday, defeating No. 14 Clemson, 4-3, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
Baylor's 10-0 record marks its best start under head coach Joey Scrivano and its best overall start since 2000. BU had been 9-0 before under Scrivano in 2012. The best start to a season in program history was 12-0 in 2000.
Losing the doubles point for just the second time in 2015, Baylor managed to recover and best the Tigers in four singles matches.
To clinch the win for BU, freshman Theresa Van Zyl earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Yuilynn Miao at the bottom of the lineup. The freshman from Namibia won six straight games, after trailing 5-1 in the second set, to win the match.
In doubles play, the Lady Bear duo of Rachel James-Baker and Kiah Generette lost to 59th-ranked Romy Koelzer and Tristen Dewar, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Next, Clemson secured the doubles point when the 27th-ranked pair of Ema Burgic and Blair Shankle fell to the top-ranked doubles pair in the country, Jessy Rompies and Beatrice Gumulya, 6-3, on court one.
In singles action, Clemson captured another point to go up 2-0 with No. 75 Rompies victory over No. 86 James-Baker, 7-5, 6-1.
From that point, the Lady Bears stormed back to take a 3-2 lead with three straight victories in singles.
The 79th-ranked Shankle (6-1, 6-4) got Baylor on the board as she upset No. 35 Koezler, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. At the top of the lineup, No. 19 Burgic took care of the 23rd-ranked Joana Eidukonyte, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Kelley Anderson claimed a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Dewar at the No. 4 spot to garner the 3-2 advantage.
The Tigers knotted the match at 3-3 when No. 119 Beatrice Gumulya beat Generette 7-6(4), 7-6 (4), on court three.
