THE RUNDOWN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Baylor track and field senior
Rachel Johnson and the women's distance medley relay squad provided All-American performances to open the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday inside the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Johnson took second in the 5,000-meter race by running a school-record time of 15:40.35.
Johnson, who came into the meet with the fourth-fastest time in the country, hung with eventual champion Emily Sisson of Providence throughout the race. The senior Bear and Sisson opened up a sizable gap over the rest of the field just over 1,200 meters into the race. The pairing then ran together until Sisson pulled out ahead of Johnson with 1,200 meters to go. The Plano, Texas, native maintained her lead over the rest of the field to secure the runner-up finish.
In the evening's final event, the women's distance medley relay team turned in a fourth-place showing in 11:04.21. All three of Baylor's first three legs were running their second race of the day. Mariah Kelly led off with a time of 3:24.3 in the 1,200-meter leg to be seventh at the first exchange. Despite stumbling on her start, Raena Rhone produced a time of 53.00 on the 400-meter leg to move BU up to third. From that point, Olicia Williams got the Lady Bears to second after the 800-meter leg, passing the baton to Maggie Montoya in 2:05.5. Montoya ran a 4:41.0 over the final 1,600-meters as the Bears finished fourth.
Johnson's second-place finish and the DMR crew's fourth-place showing gave the BU women 13 points after the first day of competition. That point total is tied for third and only one point away from first place Oregon.
After being disqualified from the 60-meter dash due to a false start earlier in the night, Trayvon Bromell recovered less than an hour later to run a world-leading 20.23 to win his heat of the 200-meters. The sophomore became the third-fastest performer and tallied the seventh-fastest-performance in world history. The only people to run faster than Bromell are Frank Fredericks (19.92) and Wallace Spearmon (20.10).
Bromell bested the previous world-leading time for 2015 of Texas A&M's Shavez Hart (20.57) and shattered the previous Baylor record of Michael Johnson, who ran 20.59 at the 1989 NCAA Championships.
The semifinal time for Bromell was the fastest of the day and .22 seconds better than second-place finisher Andre De Grasse of USC (20.55).
Despite coming into the meet with second-fastest 60-meter time (6.54), Bromell's false start cost him a chance to run in Saturday's final. He along with De Grasse were removed from the race, after jumping the gun.
To open Baylor's day, senior Mariah Kelly broke her own school record with a time of 4:37.81 in the mile to place fifth in her semifinal. With only the top four in each heat advancing automatically, Kelly was forced to wait and watch the second semifinal to find out if she would be one of two qualifiers on time.
When that race wrapped, Kelly had indeed made the cut on time by .33 seconds. However, Kelly became an auto-qualifier after a disqualification in her heat allowed her to move up to the eighth-fastest time overall.
Meanwhile in the 800 meters, Olicia Williams took control of the race with 100-meters to go and never looked back, winning her heat in 2:06.12. That time is fourth-best in school history, but was just the eighth-best on the night.
Senior Raena Rhone missed out on qualifying for her event finals as she finished 13th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.09.

TOP QUOTE #1
"I think what you take away from today is that we have a bunch of really tough-minded young people. It was really a good day. We have some more work to do. You look up there at the board and see that we are sitting one point out of first after day one is nice." - head coach Todd Harbour on the day
TOP QUOTE #2
