WACO, Texas - The sixth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will host its first conference match of the season by welcoming No. 21 TCU to the Hurd Tennis Center Sunday at 3 p.m.
"We're the middle of the second half of our season and every match matters," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We need to refocus and get back to playing the right way."
BU suffered a 4-2 setback in its last match at No. 30 Texas A&M Thursday. However, the Bears are 2-0 in Big 12 play after shutout road wins over No. 29 Oklahoma and No. 10 Oklahoma State earlier in March.
Baylor boasts four players ranked in singles. Ema Burgic (9-3) leads the way at No. 22. She is followed closely by No. 31 Blair Shankle (10-2), Kiah Generette (10-3) at No. 75 and finally No. 82 Rachel James-Baker (6-4). BU also has the No. 10 ranked doubles team in Burgic and Shankle, who are 8-3 in dual-match play.
TCU is 10-5 on the season and 3-0 in conference action, after shutting out No. 36 Texas, 4-0, Friday in Austin. The Horned Frogs also boast a 4-0 win over Kansas State and a 4-1 victory over N0. 65 Kansas.
"TCU is having a tremendous season and they would love to beat Baylor in Waco," Scrivano said. "A strong home crowd can make all difference."
For TCU, No. 41 Simona Parajova leads the way in singles action at 18-4, and is riding a five-match winning streak. Stefanie Tan sits at No. 101 in the rankings and has nine wins on the season. In doubles, Tan pairs up with sophomore Seda Arantekin for a No. 38 doubles ranking. The pair is riding a seven-match win streak.
The series is tied 15-15 all-time between the Lady Bears and Horned Frogs. Baylor pulled off a 4-3 victory in Fort Worth last season.
Prior to the match, the Baylor Cub Tennis program will hold another hour-long clinic for children 11-years old and younger.
Live scoring, a live blog and live video for the match will be available on BaylorBears.com with a full recap to follow.
After TCU, Baylor will gear up for a non-conference match against Rice in Waco on Wednesday afternoon.
