March 24, 2015 WACO, Texas - The seventh-ranked Baylor women's tennis team will return to non-conference play as No. 42 Rice comes to town Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor topped No. 21 TCU, 4-1, at home Sunday to move to 16-4 overall, 3-0 in Big 12 play and 10-1 in home matches. This will be Baylor's second meeting with Rice, after taking down then-35th-ranked Owls in Houston on Feb. 13, 4-0.
Baylor has five players ranked in singles. Ema Burgic (9-3) leads the way at No. 25. She is followed closely by No. 28 Blair Shankle (11-2), Kiah Generette (10-3) at No. 75 and No. 82 Rachael James-Baker (7-4). Leolia JeanJean is the final Bear in the rankings at No. 99, after starting the year 10-1.
In doubles play, BU also has the No.7 ranked doubles team in Burgic and Shankle, who are 8-4 in dual-match play, while Kelley Anderson and JeanJean pair together to be ranked No. 26.
Rice is 9-7 on the season and riding a five-match win streak. Most recently, the Owls defeated No. 34 William and Mary, 5-2, Sunday.
The Owls are led by 21st-ranked Natalie Beazant in singles. She is 11-1 on the season and has won her last eight matches.
Baylor trails Rice 9-12 in the all-time series. However, the Bears have won eight straight over the Owls, including the match earlier this year and three last year. Prior to the match, the Baylor Cub Tennis program will hold another hour-long clinic for children 11-years old and younger. In between singles and doubles action, Texas tennis icon Ken McAllister will be recognized.
