THE RUNDOWN
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The seventh-ranked Baylor women's tennis team slipped past West Virginia, 4-3, Friday at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Baylor improved to 18-4 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 play, while West Virginia dropped to 9-7 on the season and 0-4 in league action.
The Bears controlled the doubles point with two newly formed pairings. First, Rachael James-Baker and Ema Burgic claimed a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position. Then, Kely Putri and Theresa Van Zyl followed that result with a 6-3 triumph on court three to clinch the first point of the match for BU.
In singles play, the Mountaineers quickly tied up the score with Van Zyl falling to Carolina Lewis, 6-1, 6-1, on court five.
The Bears then went back in front as the 25th-ranked Burgic downed Kaja Mrgole, 6-1, 6-1, at the top of the lineup. Leolia JeanJean's 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ikttesh Chahal on court three put BU up 3-1.
However, WVU would win the next two matches as Kelley Anderson succumbed to Habiba Shaker, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, on court four and the 82nd-ranked James-Baker was upset by Hailey Barrett, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot.
The Bears were able to pull out the victory with Putri securing a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Yvon Martinez on court six.
